He played all or part of six seasons in the majors, between 1908-1915, for the Boston Braves, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, Indianapolis Hoosiers, and Newark Peppers. Campbell attended University and played both football and baseball.

As a member of Dan McGugin"s Commodores football team, Campbell was a halfback, selected for the All-Southern team of John Heisman in 1907.
