Not illustrated. 1849 Excerpt: ...noch entsteigen, haben auch jeden Falls einige Regenera zionen hervorgerufen. Wir finden das zähnige und drabtförmige gediegne Silber auch wieder zu Silberglanz verändert und beim Zerschneiden der dickern Zähne findet sich gewöhnlich noch ein Kern gediegnen Silbers. Ferner sahen wir oben, dass und wie aus dem Bleiglanz unter Einwirkung der Deszension, Pyromorphit entstanden sey. Nun haben wir aber zuweilen Abänderungen dieses Minerals, wo die hexagon-prismatischen Krystalle wieder mit einer Haut von Bleiglanz überzogen sind, welche Haut aus ungewöhnlich feinen Individuen besteht, wie sie sonst vom Bleiglanz nie bekannt sind, und endlich noch öftrer ist aller Pyromorphit mit Beibehaltung seiner Krystallisazion zu Bleiglanz, in dieser Abänderung auch wohl Blaubleierz genannt, reduzirt worden. Vorkommnisse der Art kennt man von Zschopau in Sachsen, von Bernkastel an der Mosel in Preussen und von Ponllaonen in der Basse-Bretagne.--In diesen Fällen ist also durch Schwefelwasserstoff eine Redukzion und Regenerazion bewirkt worden. Zu den sonderbarsten Erscheinungen von Umänderungen auf Gängen gehört jeden Falls jene völlige Vernichtung der Stoffe, aus denen die Mineralien der Gänge von Göpfersgrün bei Wunsiedel in Baiern, welche einst Quarz in seiner gemeinsten Krystall-Kombinazion, Flussspath in Oktaedern, einen Carbonites (wahrscheinlich der Braunspath, Carbonites tautoclinus) in flachen Rhomboedern, und ein nierenlormiges Mineral (vielleicht Kalkschwerspath, Thiodinus syntheticus) enthielten, und nun mit alle dem, was sonst noch von Mineralien dabei vergesellschaftet gewesen seyn mag, in Speckstein, S tea tit, umgewandelt sind. He studied under Abraham Gottlob Werner at the Freiberg Mining Academy where he received an appointment in 1813 as teacher and lapidary, and became professor of mineralogy after the departure of Friedrich Mohs in 1826.
He received his doctorate at the Universities of Jena and Marburg. He held that position until 1866. He is credited with the discovery of 47 valid mineral species.
The mineral breithauptite was named in his honor.
His work included important contributions to crystallography and the physical and chemical properties of minerals. He developed the concept of mineral paragenesis.
