Career
His education was interrupted by his family’s financial problems, and in the 1930s he worked in Harrods. After serving in the British Army in World World War II, he studied at Pembroke College, Oxford, graduating Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Letters He then joined the history department at Leeds University.
In 1964 he became Professor of History at the newly founded University of Lancaster.
