For two generations scholars and general readers have looked to John King Fairbank’s The United States and China for knowledge and insights about China. In this fourth edition, enlarged, he includes a new preface and an epilogue that brings the book up to date through the events of 1982. He has also updated the vast bibliography and both indexes. This book stands almost alone as a history of China, an analysis of Chinese society, and an account of Sino–American relations, all in brief compass. The older portions of the book still sparkle, and they have been refined by the latest scholarship and the author’s own observations in the People’s Republic of China. And many photographs, especially chosen by John and Wilma Fairbank, show a changing land and its inhabitants.

( Top Jesus scholars Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Cros...)
Top Jesus scholars Marcus J. Borg and John Dominic Crossan join together to reveal a radical and little-known Jesus. As both authors reacted to and responded to questions about Mel Gibson's blockbuster The Passion of the Christ, they discovered that many Christians are unclear on the details of events during the week leading up to Jesus's crucifixion. Using the gospel of Mark as their guide, Borg and Crossan present a day-by-day account of Jesus's final week of life. They begin their story on Palm Sunday with two triumphal entries into Jerusalem. The first entry, that of Roman governor Pontius Pilate leading Roman soldiers into the city, symbolized military strength. The second heralded a new kind of moral hero who was praised by the people as he rode in on a humble donkey. The Jesus introduced by Borg and Crossan is this new moral hero, a more dangerous Jesus than the one enshrined in the church's traditional teachings. The Last Week depicts Jesus giving up his life to protest power without justice and to condemn the rich who lack concern for the poor. In this vein, at the end of the week Jesus marches up Calvary, offering himself as a model for others to do the same when they are confronted by similar issues. Informed, challenged, and inspired, we not only meet the historical Jesus, but meet a new Jesus who engages us and invites us to follow him.

(Excerpt from The Jerusalem Sinner Saved: Come and Welcome...)
Excerpt from The Jerusalem Sinner Saved: Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ: Christ a Complete Saviour; Also, the Author's Last Sermon In presenting to the public another volume of Bunyan's Practical Works, it is thought proper to indicate briefly its general design as a whole, and the peculiar characteristics of the several treatises here associated together, to aid in accomplishing that design. The present volume is designed immediately to follow the volume of his Awakening Works, just issued from the press of our Publication Society; and is therefore made up of pieces of an opposite tendency; that is, of such as are addressed to awakened sinners, and directly adapted to invite and encourage them to come to Christ for salvation. Within this specific design, however, it will be found that a very wide range of cases and characters is embraced by the keenly observant, sympathizing and comprehensive mind of the Author. Besides the favorite work, "The Jerusalem Sinner Saved," it includes the two excellent pieces entitled "Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ," and "Christ a Complete Saviour." The Author's Last Sermon, on the New Birth, is added, as in its doctrinal connection, a fitting close to this volume of Bunyan's Inviting Works. Robert Philip, in his "Life and Times of Bunyan," has devoted a whole chapter to the first treatise in this volume - "The Jerusalem Sinner Saved." It was first issued from the press, it seems, early in 1688, six months before the Author's death; but this gives us no clue to the time of its composition, which must have been years before. ( John Gerard's Herbal or General History of Plants has ...)
John Gerard's Herbal or General History of Plants has long been the most famous English herbal. First published in 1597, it was republished in 1633 in an edition in which Thomas Johnson revised and enlarged the original text. A more capable botanist than Gerard, Johnson did not alter the wonderful Elizabethan prose of the earlier edition, but corrected errors in the old text and added much new material ― description and pictures ― to the text itself and in an appendix. This 1633 Gerard-Johnson edition describes about 2,850 plants and has about 2,700 illustrations: in both text and illustrations it is a lasting monument of Renaissance botany. At the same time, it remains what Gerard had made, perhaps unintentionally, of his 1597 work: a remarkable compendium of Elizabethan folklore and naturalistic description. This vast storehouse of information and delightful commentary is divided into three books: the first book containing grasses, rushes, reeds, grains, irises, and bulbs; the second, food plants, medicinal plants, and sweet-smelling plants; the third, roses, trees, shrubs, bushes, fruit-bearing plants, rosin and gum-producing plants, heaths, mosses and fungi (as well as corals and sponges, then thought to be plants). For each plant the authors give its Latin and English name, the kinds (when they exist), a physical description, the place of growth, the time of growth, other names, temper (whether the plant is hot, cold, dry, or moist according to the traditional medical theory of humors), vertues (the medicinal properties, use as food, etc.,) and, in all but a small number of cases, a fine woodcut illustration. In a clear and engaging prose style with large, handsome illustrations, the authors present an incredible harvest of plants: all your favorite flowers such as roses, marigolds, violets, and sunflowers; every kind of herb you can think of including sage, fennel, cumin, ginger, thyme, rosemary, and marjoram (and their medicinal "vertues") all manner of food plants such as oats, potato, and wheat; numerous trees like the cherry, peach, pear, cedar, oak, and maple; unusual plants like the goose tree and mandrake; a huge variety of medicinal plants including Solomon's seal (for broken bones), St. John's wort (used to treat wounds), and pennyroyal (for pains and giddiness in the head); and many, many more. For the herbal enthusiast truly interested in plants and their lore, this is the one herbal to have in its entirety.

Originally published in 1965, Contraception received unanimous acclaim from all quarters as the first thorough, scholarly, objective analysis of Catholic doctrine on birth control. More than ever this subject is of acute concern to a world facing serious population problems, and the author has written an important new appendix examining the development of and debates over the doctrine in the past twenty years. Noonan traces the Church's position from its earliest foundations to the present, and analyzes the conflicts and personal decisions that have affected the theologians' teachings on the subject.

(Christian theology shaped and is shaping many places in t...)
Christian theology shaped and is shaping many places in the world, but it was the Greeks who originally gave a philosophic language to Christianity. John Mark Reynolds's book When Athens Met Jerusalem provides students a well-informed introduction to the intellectual underpinnings (Greek, Roman and Christian) of Western civilization and highlights how certain current intellectual trends are now eroding those very foundations. This work makes a powerful contribution to the ongoing faith versus reason debate, showing that these two dimensions of human knowing are not diametrically opposed, but work together under the direction of revelation.

Nothing less than to bring the nations of this world under the influence of Islam and the rule of its sharia law. Beginning in A.D. 632, the entire Muslim world was ruled by a single leader called a caliph. But on March 3, 1924, after 1,292 years, the caliphate was abolished. Today, though, many Muslims envision a coming worldwide Islamic Super-state and they are determined to reestablish the caliphate and vow that it will be planted in Jerusalem. Twice in its long history, Islam has dramatically expanded its reach in the world through aggressive Jihads bringing huge areas of earth s territory under Islamic control using all means necessary, including military conquest. Evidence is increasing that Islam is poised to launch a third Jihad to once again expand its dominion. A Jerusalem caliphate? A third Jihad? According to an ancient Bible prophecy, the answer to both questions is Yes. A reasonable and commonsense interpretation of that prophecy makes clear that Islam will indeed achieve its Jerusalem caliphate and set in motion its third Jihad: And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain. . . Daniel 11:45. What does this prophecy mean? And what will happen when the Muslim world now 1.6 billion strong unites under a restored caliphate in Jerusalem? The answers are set forth in the pages of this compelling book.

(This volume assumes a multi-disciplinary approach, coveri...)
This volume assumes a multi-disciplinary approach, covering not only the history of biblical lands and the people who lived in them, but also the political, social and economic forces that shaped the culture of the place and time. "The Bible" features maps and illustrations with supporting text; charts, tables and chronologies for quick reference to significant events and periods; special spreads that focus on biblical society and describe which historical sites can be visited by the traveller today; full-colour reconstructions which "illustrate" life as it really was then; and a complete glossary. Part 1 opens with a short overview of the Bible and chronicles the main stories, peoples and events in both the Old and New Testaments. Part 2 looks at the landscape of ancient Israel region by region, with particular emphasis on key sites such as Masada, Jericho and Jerusalem. This book is aimed specifically at younger readers, but it should also be a useful resource for older students and for adults seeking a refresher course on the history of the Bible.

( The African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem are often di...)
The African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem are often dismissed as a fringe cult for their beliefs that African Americans are descendants of the ancient Israelites and that veganism leads to immortality. But John L. Jackson questions what "fringe" means in a world where cultural practices of every stripe circulate freely on the Internet. In this poignant and sophisticated examination of the limits of ethnography, the reader is invited into the visionary, sometimes vexing world of the AHIJ. Jackson challenges what Clifford Geertz called the "thick description" of anthropological research through a multidisciplinary investigation of how the AHIJ use media and technology to define their public image in the twenty-first century. Moving far beyond the "modest witness" of nineteenth-century scientific discourse or the "thick descriptions" of twentieth-century anthropology, Jackson insists that Geertzian thickness is an impossibility, especially in a world where the anthropologist's subject is a self-aware subject--one who crafts his own autoethnography while critically consuming the ethnographer's offerings. Thin Description takes as its topic a group situated along the fault lines of several diasporas--African, American, Jewish--and provides an anthropological account of how race, religion, and ethnographic representation must be understood anew in the twenty-first century lest we reenact old mistakes in the study of black humanity.

( The summer season on Cape Cod is over—now it’s time for...)
The summer season on Cape Cod is over—now it’s time for the real fun to begin. Dominick is always just passing through. He is a professional house guest who follows the sun and the leisure class from resort to resort. But this winter he lingers on a quaint New England island and in spite of his best intentions becomes involved in the travails of his eccentric geriatric hosts. An environmental protest against a proposed liquid natural gas terminal turns ugly, and by accident and happenstance Dominick becomes a mistaken suspect in terrorist bombings. But New Jerusalem News is really about its characters—the plot is just to keep them busy as we get to know them. None of them are young—white-bearded men and blue-coiffed women busy with aging, dementia, and ungrateful children. But Dominick strives to float above it all in a life of itinerant escape. A New England comedy of sorts, on another level New Jerusalem News is an extended meditation on history, identity, and what it means to drift.

At the time of his death, there were over 336,000 Catholics, 65 parishes, and 5 missions.
He issued six pastoral letters and ordained 84 priests. In 1994, he and Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz made national headlines when they insisted on maintaining exclusively male altar servers.
At age 63, Keating died from a heart attack in Rome, while making his ad limina visit to Pope John Paul World War II
