Stephen Curry is an American professional basketball player who led the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA) to championships in 2014-15, 2016-17, and 2017-18 and to the best regular-season record in league history (73-9) in 2015-16.
Background
Ethnicity:
Curry's father is of African-American descent, while his mother is an African-American Creole with Haitian ethnic background on both of her father's and mother's sides.
Wardell Stephen Curry II, the son of Sonya and Dell Curry, was born on March 14, 1988 in Akron, Ohio, United States. Both his parents are former athletes. His mother was a noted volleyball star when she was in college at Virginia Tech. His father played in the NBA throughout Curry's childhood and was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Education
Stephen Curry grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. His father, Dell, often took Curry and his younger brother Seth to his games, where they would shoot with the Hornets during warm-ups. Later, the family relocated to Toronto. There Curry played for the Queensway Christian College boys' basketball team, leading them to an undefeated season.
Following Dell's retirement, the family moved back to Charlotte and Curry enrolled at Charlotte Christian School. There he led his team to three conference titles and three state playoff appearances.
Stephen did not receive scholarship offers from major college basketball programs and attended Davidson (North Carolina) College, which had an enrollment of fewer than 2,000 students. He quickly made his mark, however, averaging 21.5 points per game as a freshman to lead all first-year players in the country. Curry became a national sensation during his sophomore season when he led 10th-seeded Davidson on an improbable run to the Elite Eight of the National Collegiate Athletic Association men's top-division basketball championship tournament in a performance that featured what would soon be recognized as his signature shot: a three-pointer from well outside the line. His junior season did not feature any such postseason heroics, but his average of 28.6 points per game led the country, and he was named a consensus first-team All-American.
In 2009, Stephen Curry entered the NBA draft, in which he was selected by the Warriors with the seventh overall pick. He made an immediate impact with the Warriors, becoming the team's starting point guard and averaging 17.5 points per game in his first season. A series of ankle sprains led to Curry's playing just 26 games in the 2011-12 season, and he underwent off-season ligament surgery. He then signed a modest four-year $44 million contract extension that allowed Golden State to surround its budding star with other talented players. Curry led the league in three-pointers made (272) in 2012-13. The following season he repeated that feat (with 261) and earned his first All-Star selection. In 2014-15 he made a then-record 286 three-pointers while leading the Warriors to an NBA-best 67-15 record and was named the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP). In the following postseason, Curry propelled the Warriors to the franchise's first title in 40 years over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Curry led his team to even greater heights in 2015-16, as Golden State bested the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls' 72-10 regular-season record by one additional victory. He also topped the NBA with an average of 30.1 points per game and shattered his own league standard by making an astounding 402 three-point shots. However, the Warriors' historic season ultimately ended in shocking disappointment as the team surrendered a 3-1 NBA finals lead to the Cavaliers.
In 2016-17 Curry led the NBA in three-point field goals made (324) for a fifth straight season as the Warriors again led the NBA in wins (67). Golden State then ran off an unprecedented 12 straight victories to open the postseason and won a third consecutive Western Conference title. The Warriors finally had a postseason loss in game four of the NBA finals, but the team rebounded to defeat the Cavaliers in five games to capture Curry's second NBA title.
A knee injury limited Curry to 51 games during the 2017-18 regular season, ending his five-year run as the league leader in three-point field goals attempted and made. He returned during the second round of the playoffs to help the Warriors win their fourth consecutive conference championship and third NBA title (in a four-game sweep of the Cavaliers).
Curry continued his dazzling play in 2018-19, averaging 27.3 points per game and earning first-team All-NBA honours. In the playoffs, he guided an injury-plagued Warriors team to a fifth straight conference title, the most in a row since the NBA instituted conferences in 1970-71. However, additional injuries and inspired play by the opposing Toronto Raptors led to a six-game Golden State loss in the finals.
Curry was expected to take on a greater offensive load in the 2019-20 season. Klay Thompson, his teammate, was injured, and Kevin Durant left the Warriors as a free agent. On October 30, 2019, in the game against the Phoenix Suns Curry collided with Aron Baynes, who was trying to take a charge. Baynes fell on Curry's left hand, which required surgery to repair his broken second metacarpal. On March 5, 2020, Curry returned against the Raptors and recorded 23 points, six rebounds and seven assists in a 121-113 Warriors' loss.
It's also worth noting, that Stephen Curry served as executive producer of the film Breakthrough and the film Emanuel. He is both executive producer and resident golf pro on the American sports reality competition television series Holey Moley.
On June 24, 2020, Stephen released a trailer for his new show on his YouTube channel, which is called Ultimate Home Championships, a show featuring people such as DeAndre Jordan, Ronda Rousey, and Kristopher London where contestants compete in wacky at-home challenges using things at their home.
Stephen Curry is considered to be the greatest shooter in NBA history. He revolutionized the game of basketball by inspiring basketball teams, from high school to the NBA, to regularly utilize the three-point shot. He was named Southern Conference Player of the Year twice and set the all-time scoring record for both Davidson and the Southern Conference. He also set the single-season NCAA record for three-pointers made.
Curry has become an international celebrity, on par with four-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) LeBron James. He was ranked among the most famous international athletes by ESPN, while Forbes has ranked him among the world's highest-paid celebrities for his endorsements.
He was drafted in 2009 by Golden State Warriors and eventually developed into one of pro basketball's top players with his stellar shooting skills. In 2014-2015, Curry won his first MVP award and led the Warriors to their first championship since 1975. The following season, he became the first player in NBA history to be elected MVP by a unanimous vote and to lead the league in scoring while shooting above 50-40-90. He then helped the Warriors win the NBA title again in 2017 and 2018, both times over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Curry is currently third in all-time made three-pointers in NBA history.
Steph Curry dedicated his life to Christ in the eighth grade at a youth service led by "Pastor Jason," who made it clear that kids can't live off their parents' faith.
Curry also said: "My faith is tested on the court as much as it is in life. It's the part that always keeps me focused on what I need to do when it comes to my family, when it comes to my job, when it comes to how I treat other people, my appreciation for life and all the good things that happen and how to deal with the bad things that happen. Christianity was more something that was important to my parents but I never really understood it. It was a decision I needed to make for myself. I was kinda just going with the flow."
Politics
Steph Curry has generally been low-key about his political beliefs. He made no appearances at political events. However, in the last years, Steph's speech has become increasingly political. He quietly endorsed Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump at a tech event in September 2016.
Views
In 2012, Curry started donating three insecticide-treated mosquito nets for every three-pointer he made to the United Nations Foundation's Nothing But Nets campaign to combat malaria. In 2015, after winning the MVP award, Stephen donated his prize, a 2016 Kia Sorento, to the East Oakland Youth Development Center.
Quotations:
"Success is not an accident, success is actually a choice."
"Basketball isn't just a sport. It is an art, one that must be mastered to succeed."
"Being a superstar means you've reached your potential, and I don't think I've reached my potential as a basketball player and as a leader yet."
"Be the best version of yourself in anything you do. You don't have to live anybody else's story."
"I'd rather be a non-All-Star playing in the Western Conference finals than an All-Star who's sitting at home in May."
"I do a little sign on the court every time I make a shot or a good pass and I pound my chest and point to the sky - it symbolizes that I have a heart for God. It's something that my mom and I came up with in college and I do it every time i step on the floor as a reminder of who I'm playing for."
"When it comes to basketball, I was always the smallest kid on my team. I had a terrible, ugly, catapult shot from the time I was 14 because I wasn't strong enough to shoot over my head, and I had to reconstruct that over the summer and it was the worst three months of my life. You'd think there are no hurdles or obstacles that I had to overcome, but even when I got to high school I wasn't ranked. I wasn't ranked. I wasn't highly touted as a high school prospect. I had nobody really running, knocking on my door saying 'Please, please, please come play for our school'."
"I want to practice to the point where it's almost uncomfortable how fast you shoot, so that in the game things kind of slow down."
"There's more to life than basketball. The most important thing is your family and taking care of each other and loving each other no matter what."
"I've never been afraid of big moments. I get butterflies. I get nervous and anxious, but I think those are all good signs that I'm ready for the moment."
"Every time I rise up, I have confidence that I'm going to make it."
