( In this second edition of her 1989 survey on feminist t...)
In this second edition of her 1989 survey on feminist theory, Rosemarie Tong provides a more comprehensive and substantially redrawn map of twentieth-century feminist thinking. Besides providing up-to-date coverage of liberal, radical (libertarian and cultural), and Marxist-socialist schools of feminism, she covers psychoanalytic, existentialist, and postmodern feminism. All the chapters have been rethought and new chapters on ecofeminism and multicultural and global feminism have been added. In the clear-sighted and accessible style for which has become known, Tong guides the reader through the complexities of even the most notoriously difficult thinkers. Students will become familiar with many of the essential figures in the feminist tradition as well as some of the issues that have been of special concern to women (e.g., pornography, reproductive technology, housework, the environment, and militarism). Moreover, students are repeatedly urged to consider the many differences that separate women (class, race, ethnicity, age, nationality, religion) as well as the sameness that continue to unite women.Tong treats all views with respect and encourages the reader to think both sympathetically and critically about what feminism is and what relevance it has to their own lives. As valuable as the first edition of Feminist Thought, this second edition surpasses its predecessor in depth and breadth. Clearly, Tong believes that feminist thought is still developing even as it approaches the millennium.

(Feminist scholars have long been concerned with how women...)
Feminist scholars have long been concerned with how women and sexuality are perceived and treated by the American legal system. Feminists have put forth a variety of arguments seeking the causes and solutions to the class-based and sex-biased characteristics of the legal system that contribute to the victimization of women in contemporary society. No consensus within the women's movement has been achieved on a number of legal issues, such as pornography or prostitution, since approaches are often divided by political, economic, moral, or sexual ideology.Women, Sex, and the Law is a comprehensive survey and analysis of the legal and sexual issues important to women. Rosemarie Tong introduces the reader to the different feminist and legal perspectives on the causes and solutions for the problems of pornography, sexual harassment, prostitution, rape, and woman-battering. Tong clearly and concisely details and assesses the legal theory and practice for each issue, describs and critiques the various feminist debates surrounding these concerns, and offers her own thoughtful proposals for ameliorating the discriminatory tendencies and improving the effectiveness of our present legal system.

( Feminist Thought is a clear, comprehensive, and incisiv...)
Feminist Thought is a clear, comprehensive, and incisive introduction to the major traditions of feminist theory, from liberal feminism, radical feminism, and Marxist and socialist feminism to care-focused feminism, psychoanalytic feminism, women of color feminisms, and ecofeminism. The fourth edition has been thoroughly revised and expanded. The chapter on multiculturalism was renamed Women of Color Feminisms and significantly updated, revised, and expanded by Tina Fernandes Botts of the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. The revisions also include a new section on existentialism as it relates to postmodern feminism, and a new conclusion that contemplates third-wave feminism and the future directions of feminist theory. Learning tools such as the new end-of-chapter discussion questions, and the bibliography, organized by topics within chapters, make Feminist Thought an essential resource for students and thinkers who want to understand the theoretical origins and complexities of contemporary feminist debates.

( No other cluster of medical issues affects the genders ...)
No other cluster of medical issues affects the genders as differently as those related to procreationcontraception, sterilization, abortion, artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, surrogate motherhood, and genetic screening. Yet, the moral diversity among feminists has led to political fragmentation, foiling efforts to create policies that are likely to serve the interests of the largest possible number of women. In this remarkable book, Rosemarie Tong offers an approach to feminist bioethics that serves as a catalyst, bringing together the varied perspectives on choice, control, and connection. Emphasizing the complexity of feminist debates, she guides feminists toward consensus in thought, cooperation in action, and a world that would have no room for domination and subordination.Tong fairly and comprehensively presents the traditions of both feminist and non-feminist ethics. Although feminist approaches to bioethics derive many insights from nonfeminist ethics and bioethics, Tong shows that their primary source of inspiration is feminist ethics, leading them to ask the so-called woman question” in order to raise women's consciousness about the systems, structures, and relationships that oppress them. Feminist bioethicists are, naturally, focused on acting locally in the worlds of medicine and science. Their different feminist voices must be raised at the policy table with one message in order to actually do something to make gender equity a present reality rather than a mere future possibility. Inability to define a plan that guarantees liberation for all women must not prevent feminists from offering a plan that promises to improve the estates of many women. Otherwise, a perspective less appealing to women may fill the gap.

Controlling Our Reproductive Destiny covers today's revolution in reproduction-controlling and reproduction-aiding technologies. It focuses on the ways in which science can now provide real procreative choices, while at the same time giving equal treatment to ethical, legal, and social dimensions of these advances. Introductory chapters discuss procreative options, present an ethical and legal framework for evaluating reproduction-controlling and reproduction-aiding technologies, and describe the human reproductive system. The authors then present methods of contraception, sterilization, abortion, fertility and infertility, artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer, and contracted motherhood. Throughout, they provide a comprehensive discussion of the philosophical implications of new developments in these areas. A New Liberal Arts book
