As physicians are faced with new and wonderful options for saving lives, transplanting organs, and furthering research, they also must wrestle with new and troubling choices-who should receive scarce and vital treatment, how we determine when life ends, what limits should be placed on care for the dying, and more. This book by renowned theologian Paul Ramsey, first published thirty years ago, anticipated these moral and ethical issues and addressed them with cogency and power, providing the intellectual foundations for the field of bioethics. This second edition of Ramsey's classic work includes a new foreword by Margaret Farley and essays by Albert R. Jonsen and William F. May that help to locate and interpret Ramsey historically and intellectually.

In this book, Ramsey addresses the moral problems of medicine, life and death and not merely to those who share his faith. Ramsey sets out with both clarity and and in detail the moral suppositions and implications of recent judgments by the courts, and especially by the Supreme Court, on abortion. A product of a lifetime of deep concern and keen thinking about the ethical, medical and legal-policy aspects of the "edges of life."

(This searching critique of the United Methodist Bishops p...)
This searching critique of the United Methodist Bishops pastoral letter on war and peace in a nuclear age, by America s foremost Christian ethicist, exposes theological flaws from which flow gaps in moral argument and strangely utopian politics. Never before has "In Defense of Creation" been more thoroughly analyzed. At the same time Paul Ramsey gives a full-length and detailed comparison of the Methodist document with The Challenge of Peace by the U.S. Catholic Bishops. Issues of nuclear ethics, as seen by the leaders of two major churches, are set fully in view for the first time in a single volume. This "ecumenical consultation" is broadened by drawing extensively on the writings of Mennonite theologian John Howard Yoder. The book s larger purpose is to construe an encounter between Christian just-war tradition and Christian pacifism. This comparative discussion of Christian ethics should be of interest to any reader concerned about the nuclear crisis. Some of the questions confronted in these pages are: What do people mean by "nonviolence"? Should we never kill another human being, or never kill another human being unjustly? Do Christian pacifism and Christian just-war teachings have anything in common in their understanding of the Christian moral life? Do different interpretations of the person and work of Jesus Christ give rise to Christian pacifism and to just-war participation? Are these irreducibly different options equally valid for followers of Christ? Do the tests of discrimination and proportion lead to the same prohibitions on war and limits in war in a nuclear age? With an epilogue by Stanley Hauerwas, this volume offers the unusual event of two Methodist laymen engaged in lively debate over their church and the modern world.

( The study of religion, traditionally sponsored by secta...)
The study of religion, traditionally sponsored by sectarian institutions, has within recent decades come to claim an increasingly larger share of attention in colleges and universities generally, and in the process the constituent intellectual disciplines have undergone significant changes. In this volume, twelve distinguished scholars take stock of the current state of the field and explore the prospects for future development. The areas covered in the essays (with their authors) are biblical studies (Stendhal), Western religious history (Clebsch), philosophy of religion (Diamond), theology (McGill), Catholic studies (Preller), Jewish studies (Neusner), sociology of religion (Harrison), comparative religious ethics (Little), history of religions (Sullivan), religion and art (Turner), and religion and literature (Driver). A "practical commentary" on the current state of the field (Gustafson) concludes the volume. Taken together, the essays provide an overview of the subject matter of religion study that should enable scholars of religion to situate and define their own work while helping others to appreciate the claims that work has upon the resources and concerns of colleges and universities. Originally published in 1970. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

( Muhammad: a frank look at his influential (and violent)...)
Muhammad: a frank look at his influential (and violent) life and teachings In The Truth about Muhammad, New York Times bestselling author and Islam expert Robert Spencer offers an honest and telling portrait of the founder of Islam-perhaps the first such portrait in half a century-unbounded by fear and political correctness, unflinching, and willing to face the hard facts about Muhammad's life that continue to affect our world today. From Muhammad's first "revelation" from Allah (which filled him with terror that he was demonpossessed) to his deathbed (from which he called down curses upon Jews and Christians), it's all here-told with extensive documentation from the sources that Muslims themselves consider most reliable about Muhammad. Spencer details Muhammad's development from a preacher of hellfire and damnation into a political and military leader who expanded his rule by force of arms, promising his warriors luridly physical delights in Paradise if they were killed in his cause. He explains how the Qur'an's teaching on warfare against unbelievers developed-with constant war to establish the hegemony of Islamic law as the last stage. Spencer also gives the truth about Muhammad's convenient "revelations" justifying his own licentiousness; his joy in the brutal murders of his enemies; and above all, his clear marching orders to his followers to convert non-Muslims to Islam-or force them to live as inferiors under Islamic rule. In The Truth about Muhammad, you'll learn - The truth about Muhammad's multiple marriages (including one to a nine-year-old) - How Muhammad set legal standards that make it virtually impossible to prove rape in Islamic countries - How Muhammad's example justifies jihad and terrorism - The real "Satanic verses" incident (not the Salman Rushdie version) that remains a scandal to Muslims - How Muhammad's faulty knowledge of Judaism and Christianity has influenced Islamic theology--and colored Muslim relations with Jews and Christians to this day. Recognizing the true nature of Islam, Spencer argues, is essential for judging the prospects for largescale Islamic reform, the effective prosecution of the War on Terror, the democracy project in Afghanistan and Iraq, and immigration and border control to protect the United States from terrorism. All of which makes it crucial for every citizen (and policymaker) who loves freedom to read and ponder The Truth about Muhammad

Deeds and Rules in Christian Ethics, 1966 and Two concepts of general rules in Christian Ethics’, 1966). Working within the broad tradi- "on of natural law theory, Ramsey sought to demonstrate that the teaching of Christ fulfilled and transformed that law. Although the command ‘do what love and the Christian community command' is fundamental, Ramsey was anxious to qualify the role of love in his ethical system.
Thus he recognized the rules of justice which arc independent of the basic principle: he is critical of various forms of teleological ethics. And he argues that it is not always permissible to perform the most loving action since such an action may run counter to a general practice which embodies love. These themes also emerge from his treatment of twentieth-century moral theorists (1962).
Ramsey argues that a theory of ‘statecraft’ forms an important part of the Christian ethic and in 1961 and 1968 he develops an account of the role of the nation state within an international community.
The theory of political authority and political responsibility which he defends allows for justified conflict and violence in carefully defined circumstances. ‘To "Save politics",’ he writes, ‘will require an effective challenge both to native American pacificism.. and to our inclination to invoke a narrow doctrine of "military necessity"’. The account, which closely follows traditional 'just-war' theory, also permits revolutionary violence in the pursuit of democratic ideals.
The most important shift of emphasis between 1961 and 1968 relates to the defence in his later work of the claim that if it would be immoral to use a certain form of force it would also be immoral to threaten the use of such force.
In later years Ramsey’s focus shifted to medical ethics. The definitive statement of his views within this field is Ethics at the Edge of Life (1978), a revision and extension of the 1975 Bampton Lectures at Columbia University which deals with issues such as abortion, euthanasia and the benign neglect of defective newborns. A notable feature of Ramsey’s position is his emphasis on the value of ‘early’ human life.
He argued that six months of babyhood might be viewed as being of as much ultimate worth as sixty years of manhood or womanhood. Ramsey writes: ‘Respect for life and the protection of life.. do not vary according to duration, achievement or productivity.’.
