Muhammad lived at Beilbeis in Egypt under the patronage of the Vizier Ibn Hanna, writing religious poetry that was very popular in the Islamic world. He was the author of the famous "Poem of the Mantle" (Al kawakib al-durriya fi madh khair al barriya) popularly known as the Burda. In it the poet praised the Prophet, who cured him of paralysis by appearing to him in his sleep and wrapping him in his cloak. The poem soon came to be regarded as sacred; verses from it were used as charms. It also was used in the services for the burial of the dead. Busiri died about 1296.
