Hilary Duff is an American actress, singer, producer, and designer, who came to fame as the title character on the Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire and her debut pop record, Metamorphosis.
Background
Ethnicity:
Hilary Duff has German, English, Scottish, Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, Welsh, French, and possibly 1/16th Polish, roots.
Hilary Duff was born on September 28, 1987, in Houston, Texas, the United States. She was the second of two daughters born to Susan Duff, a housewife turned film and music producer, and Bob Duff, the owner of a chain of Texas convenience stores. Taking after her sister, Haylie, Hilary entered ballet classes and auditioned for local theatrical productions with her sibling at a young age. They also took up roles in local theatre productions. The passion for performing arts only heightened over the following years as the sisters decided to make a career out of it. At the age of six, Hilary was cast alongside her sister in a BalletMet Columbus production of The Nutcracker Suite in San Antonio. It was a positive experience for both of the girls, who, in turn, aspired to act professionally. In 1993, they moved to California with their mother, who began managing their careers.
Education
Beginning at the age of eight, Hilary was home-schooled by her mother. Duff also took two online correspondence courses via the Harvard Extension School in 2005.
Upon reaching California, the Duff sisters tried their luck as an actor and model. Initially, the sisters appeared in several television commercials and modeled for various clothing brands. Hilary played minor uncredited roles in several television series including True Women and Playing by Heart. In 1998, she received her first major role as Wendy for the film Casper Meets Wendy, based on the Harvey Comics characters. She next appeared in an episode of the CBS medical drama Chicago Hope.
In 2000 Hilary Duff was cast on a new NBC sitcom, Daddio. She worked on the show alongside Michael Chiklis. After just one episode - the pilot - Duff was dropped from the series by its producers. Depressed, Duff wanted to give up on show business, but her mother encouraged her not to give up her dream. The very next week, she landed the lead role on a new Disney Channel show entitled Lizzie McGuire.
Hilary Duff became a household name and a worldwide phenomenon thanks to her starring role. With her wholesome blonde looks and exuberant personality, Duff stepped into the part of the likable middle-schooler with ease, though she had very little professional experience before the show debuted in early 2001. The series was a major hit and the show made her a teen idol and adolescent sensation instantly. Such was the rage and popularity of the show that Disney earned an estimated $100 million from the show's merchandise.
After starring in 65 episodes over two seasons, Duff reprised the role of McGuire for 2003's The Lizzie McGuire Movie. The film was incredibly successful, grossing more than $55 million worldwide. Duff's success with Lizzie McGuire led her to work in other facets with Disney, including starring in the 2002 Disney Channel movie Cadet Kelly and releasing an album, Santa Claus Lane, for the company's music label. In 2003, Duff and Disney entered negotiations for an extension to the Lizzie McGuire franchise, but talks broke down over pay disputes.
Nevertheless, 2003 proved to be a banner year for Hilary Duff, as the 16-year-old starred in three movies - Agent Cody Banks, The Lizzie McGuire Movie and Cheaper by the Dozen - and released her first non-Disney studio album, Metamorphosis. Featuring songs written by both Hilary and Haylie Duff, the album eventually went triple-platinum in the United States. By now, Duff had developed a reputation as a teen idol and drew comparisons to the late Annette Funicello, who had risen to prominence as the star of The Mickey Mouse Club half a century before.
In 2004 Duff starred in two films: A Cinderella Story, which was moderately successful at the box office and Raise Your Voice, which bombed. That same year, the starlet released her second album, the eponymous Hilary Duff, which earned platinum certification, and launched her own fashion line, Stuff by Hilary Duff, which saw mass distribution through Target and K-Mart. She would later launch the fashion line Femme for DKNY Jeans.
By 2005, Duff, desperately wanting to move away from tween fare so that she could be taken seriously as an adult actress, was attempting to reshape her public image. She starred in The Perfect Man with Heather Locklear in 2005, and in Material Girls with sister Haylie in 2006, but both films bombed with movie audiences.
Duff's fourth studio album, Dignity, was released in 2007 to both critical and commercial acclaim, praised for offering a more mature, adult sound than that of its predecessors. Working with American singer-songwriter Kara DioGuardi, Duff co-wrote all but one song on the album.
Duff was then offered the lead role in the 2008 reboot of the 90210 TV franchise, but passed on the part, preferring to make a definitive move from her high school image. She went on to appear in the political satire War, Inc. (2008) alongside John Cusack.
Continuing her efforts to bolster her image as a serious actress, Duff has appeared in several independent films in recent years. In 2009, she starred in the indie drama According to Greta with Melissa Leo and Ellen Burstyn, and in the comedic drama Stay Cool with Winona Ryder, Jon Cryer, and Chevy Chase. Duff was then cast alongside Val Kilmer and Kris Kristofferson in 2010's Bloodworth and was later featured in the 2012 comedy She Wants Me, along with Josh Gad and Charlie Sheen.
In 2010, Duff set up a book-writing deal with Simon & Schuster. Published in October 2010, the first young adult novel to result from her and Elise Allen's collaboration was entitled Elixir. It was subsequently released internationally and became a New York Times best-seller. Devoted, the sequel to Duff's authorial debut was released in October 2011. Devoted picks up where its predecessor left off and continues the story of the original novel. In 2013, Duff released the third and final novel in her Elixir trilogy, titled True.
Duff has also continued to appear on the small screen, playing Lane Daniels in the 2010 TV movie Beauty & the Briefcase and guest-starring on a number of series, including Gossip Girl, Community, Raising Hope and Two and a Half Men.
Staring in 2015 Duff signed on to play the role in TV Land's Younger, opposite Sutton Foster. The series is based on a Pamela Redmond Satran novel, and created and executive-produced by Darren Star for TV Land. Duff was cast as Kelsey Peters, an "ambitious 20-something" who persuades Foster's character to work in a publishing firm. In April 2014, it was announced that the pilot was picked up for a series with a 12-episode deal and would premiere in the fall; the premiere date was later changed to 2015. The show marks Duff's first starring role in a television series since her appearance on Lizzie McGuire. Younger premiered on March 31, 2015. The series has received generally positive reviews from critics and was renewed for a second season in April 2015 and a third season on January 6, 2016. The show was renewed for a fourth season on June 14, 2016. Season six was released on June 12, 2019. Her performance as Kelsey Peters earned her praise, and a nomination for "Favorite Cable TV Actress", at the 2016 and 2017 People's Choice Awards.
Duff released her fifth studio album, Breathe In. Breathe Out., in the spring of 2015 with its accompanying singles Chasing the Sun, All About You and Sparks. In January 2017, Duff became one of the investors for the cosmetic line Kopari Beauty, alongside other celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, and Karlie Kloss.
Duff returned to her designing career in January 2018, for the first time in nine years since "Femme for DKNY". She launched a collaborative eyewear line with GlassesUSA called the "Muse x Hilary Duff" collection. In the same month, she announced that she was filming an independent movie, later revealed to be titled The Haunting of Sharon Tate, relating to the Tate murders. It is the first movie Duff has filmed since Flock of Dudes in 2013. The film is written and directed by Daniel Farrands, and Duff will also serve as an executive producer on the film starring Lydia Hearst and former Cheaper by the Dozen 2 co-star, Jonathan Bennett. The film was released in April 2019 and at the 2019 Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival, Duff won the Best Actress award for her portrayal of the title character. The Haunting of Sharon Tate was panned by critics and Duff's performance received mixed reviews, with Variety calling her "too contemporary" to portray Sharon. Debra Tate, the sister of the late Sharon, had also expressed her disapproval of the project. Prior to filming the movie, Duff traveled to Dunfermline in Scotland to film her appearance on an episode in the tenth season of Who Do You Think You Are?. The episode revealed that the King of Scots Robert the Bruce is Duff's 21 times maternal great-grandfather.
In September 2018, it was confirmed that Duff will be lending her voice as the lead character in an animated film, Meet Your Tooth Fairy. The same month, due to the success of her eyewear collection, Duff launched a limited edition of her "Muse x Hilary Duff" collection, namely the "Bold Capsule". This capsule includes new varieties of "color blocks" and "asymmetrical details" and among others. In November, Duff together with several other celebrities including Patrick Schwarzenegger and Will Smith were investors in the viral 2-in-1 children's product "Cubcoat", and raised $4.85 million. The same month, she launched a capsule collection under her sister Haylie's children clothing line "Little Moon Society", aside from a festive "Holiday Capsule" version of her eyewear collection. In January 2019, Duff invested again, this time with Chelsea Handler for cosmetics line Nudestix.
Duff began her acting career at a young age and quickly became labeled a teen idol, she later came to prominence as a successful singer, with lots of prestigious awards and nominations. Moreover, several of her works reached the top of the Billboard 200 chart in the United States.
Hilary Duff's success in the entertainment industry led her to venture into business with fashion lines of her own such as Stuff by Duff, Femme for DKNY and most recently the "Muse x Hilary Duff" collection, a collaborative effort with GlassesUSA. She has also invested in a number of businesses ranging from cosmetics to children products. Duff has been described as an inspiration by subsequent Disney teen stars such as Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Bridgit Mendler, and Selena Gomez, and has sold an estimated 15 million records since her debut in 2002.
Duff made the Forbes list of richest young stars under 25, she made $15 million for the year of 2005. In 2007, Forbes Magazine estimated her earnings for the year at $12 million. Hilary Duff has her own Barbie doll.

Duff worked for a great number of charities, including Kids With a Cause, which helps children stricken by poverty, hunger, sickness, a lack of education, abandonment, neglect and/or abuse, since it was founded in September 1999. For natural disasters, she donated $250,000 to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina in addition to donating over 2.5 million meals to Hurricane Katrina victims in the southern United States in 2005. In August 2006, Duff traveled to a New Orleans elementary school and worked with USA Harvest to distribute meals.
In October 2008, Duff starred in a public service announcement for The Think Before You Speak Campaign by Ad Council and GLSEN to prevent youth from using anti-LGBT vocabulary, such as the phrase "That's So Gay." In July 2009, Duff was named as a Youth Ambassador to the children of the Colombian capital, Bogotá. As a Youth Ambassador, she spent five days in the country, distributing backpacks filled with food to needy children.
Duff is a strong animal rights supporter and commented when asked what she would do if she was not a celebrity, "I always wanted to be a veterinarian when I was younger, but then I figured out that animals actually die there, so that was not the job for me. Definitely something with kids or animals or something like that."
In 2012, a few months after giving birth to her son, Duff was actively involved in the Johnson's Baby Cares campaign. The campaign included activities such as sending care kits and care cards to new mothers across the United States as a motivation. It also raises funds for children and poor families together with Save The Children. Towards the start of the Christmas shopping season in November 2013, Duff teamed up with Duracell in Canada for a campaign especially for kids in hospitals. The campaign called Powering Holiday Smiles donated 20,000 batteries to hospitals across Canada in order to power lifesaving medical devices and the thousands of playroom toys and games that children and their families would be using during the holiday season of 2013 and beyond. The campaign encourages Canadians to buy Duracell Quantum AA-16 batteries, in which for every packet sold, one dollar will be donated to the Children's Miracle Network. The campaign began on November 22 and ended on December 27, 2013. In order to promote the campaign, Duff paid a visit to The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario, to hand out brand new toys supplied by Hasbro. She has discussed the campaign on Breakfast Television Toronto, a radio show, and in numerous magazine interviews.
Quotations:
"We raise so much money for hospitals, but it's not just about that. Anybody can come up with a bunch of money to give to somebody. It's about going to a hospital and hanging out with the kids and dancing and singing with them or giving underprivileged kids a chance to go to a theme park for a day or rebuilding a playground. I love it so much. It's really gratifying."
"I think girls feel like they're not cool unless they have a boyfriend or they don't feel comfortable or happy with themselves - that's not true! You gotta be independent! You gotta show the power!"
"I don't want to restrict myself from doing things that stimulate me just to make them happy. If they continue to like me, that's cool, but I don't want to cater to them. I'm not 13, 14, or 15 anymore."
Personality
Hilary Duff is full of energy, always on the go, fidgety, and quite hyperactive. Life is in a constant motion for her and she devours it powerfully.
Physical Characteristics:
Hilary Duff has an average built, a height of 5 ft 2 in or 157.5 cm, and a weight of 55 kg or 121 pounds. She has long strawberry blond hair and light brown eyes.
Following the birth of her son, Duff said that it took her a year for her to lose her baby weight and that she lost nearly 50 pounds by 2013. Duff stated that she revamped her diet and hired a personal trainer to train her in boxing, which was one of the ways she lost her weight in addition to piloxing and spin cycling. Duff's slow but healthy method in shedding off her post-pregnancy weight was praised by health experts and was looked up by actress Tia Mowry, who cited Duff as her idol in taking up a healthy and safer way to lose the excess weight gained during pregnancy.
Duff was named to Maxim’s Hot 100 list, coming in at #23. The following year, she was # 25, #31 in 2009, #27 in 2010, and #40 in 2011. She has also been included on FHM‘s 100 sexiest women list.
