Poolla Tirupati Raju was born on September 3, 1904 in Bapiraju Kohapalli, India.
Raju received his Sampurna Madhyama in Nyaya and his Sastri in Sanskrit literature from Benares Sanskrit College. He also got his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Allahabad, and his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Calcutta.
Poola Tirupati Raju began his career as a lecturer and reader in philosophy at Andhra University in 1932-1949. He became a full professor of philosophy and psychology at the University of Rajasthan in 1949, remaining in that position until he moved to the United States in 1962. He was named Gillespie Visiting Professor of Eastern Studies at the College of Wooster in 1962-1964, and was a full professor of philosophy and Indian studies there from 1964.
During his career, he also served as a visiting professor and lecturer at various other universities throughout the United States and the world, including the Asia Institute, the University of Hawaii, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Illinois, and the University of Mainz.
His first book was Thought and Reality: Hegelianism and Advaita (1937). He wrote and edited at least sixteen books throughout his career, including Idealistic Thought of India (1953), The Concept of Man (1960), Introduction to Comparative Philosophy (1962), The Philosophical Traditions of India (1971), and his last two books, Spirit, Being, and Self: Studies in Indian and Western Philosophy (1982) and Structural Depths of Indian Thought (1985). He also contributed over two hundred articles to the various journals and encyclopedias in the field.
