Jessica Alba is an American actress and businesswoman. Alba appeared on the big screen for the first time in the 1994 comedy Camp Nowhere. Then she sprang into the spotlight with her role as Max Guevera in James Cameron's sci-fi series Dark Angel. Alba went on to star in two installments of a big-screen adaptation of Fantastic Four and collaborated with Robert Rodriguez for multiple films.
Background
Ethnicity:
Jessica Alba's mother has Danish, Welsh, German, English and French ancestry, while her paternal grandparents, who were born in California, were both the children of Mexican immigrants.
Jessica Alba was born on April 28, 1981, in Pomona, California, the United States, to Catherine Louisa (née Jensen) and Mark David Alba. She has a younger brother Joshua. Her mother was a lifeguard by profession. Alba's father was in the Air Force when she was growing up, resulting in her family moving frequently. The family lived in various cities including Biloxi, Mississippi, and Del Rio, Texas, before finally settling in Claremont, California.
Education
During her childhood, Alba battled a number of serious ailments, including a collapsed lung, a kidney infection, a ruptured appendix, a tonsillar cyst, and frequent battles with pneumonia. In an interview with Larry King, she joked that her ongoing childhood illnesses were part of her inspiration for becoming an actor; she had a lot of time to live in her own imagination and fantasize about being someone else.
She expressed her interest in acting when she was very young. When she was 11, she took part in an acting competition in Beverly Hills which she won. The grand prize which was free acting classes helped her get started with her passion. Just nine months later, she was signed by an agent.
In an effort to focus more on her acting career, she took on extra coursework and graduated from Claremont High School at just 16. She’s also openly talked about being bullied in high school, which could have given her extra motivation to move on from high school quickly. After graduating from high school, she studied with William H. Macy and his wife, Felicity Huffman, at David Mamet's Atlantic Theater Company.
Alba began studying acting in her early teens and had an agent by the age of 12. A gifted young actress, Jessica has played a variety of roles ranging from light comedy to gritty drama since beginning her career. She made her feature film debut in 1993 in Hollywood Pictures' comedy Camp Nowhere (1994).
Originally hired for two weeks, she got her break when an actress in a principal role suddenly dropped out. Jessica cheerfully admits it wasn't her prodigious talent or charm that inspired the director to tap her to take over the part - it was her hair, which matched the original performer's. The two-week job stretched to two months, and Jessica ended the film with an impressive first credit.
Two national TV commercials for Nintendo and J.C. Penney quickly followed before Jessica was featured in several independent films. She branched out into TV in 1994 with a recurring role in Nickelodeon's popular comedy series The Secret World of Alex Mack (1994). She played an insufferable young snob, devoted to making life miserable for the title character, played by Larisa Oleynik. That same year, she won the role of Maya in Flipper (1995) and filmed the pilot for the series.
After a string of guest appearances, Alba was given the leading role in the science-fiction series Dark Angel. The show was created by director James Cameron and premiered in the fall of 2000. She played Max Guevera, a genetically modified young woman who had escaped from a genetics research project that used children as test subjects. Set in 2019 in a post-apocalyptic Seattle, the series featured storylines about her search for others from the project as well as the efforts of the government to recapture her.
Alba's character worked with a journalist named Logan Cale, played by Michael Weatherly. Off-screen, Alba and Weatherly developed a personal relationship and were engaged for a time. While the series earned some critical acclaim, Dark Angel only lasted for two seasons.
Her first starring role in a major studio film was the Honey (2003), Universal Pictures' contemporary urban drama that grossed over $60 million worldwide. She has since made over 25 feature films that have earned a combined box-office total of over $800 million, including comedies and dramas, from gritty independents to major studio blockbusters.
In 2005 she starred opposite Bruce Willis and an all-star cast in the provocative and critically acclaimed Sin City (2005), directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller. She next starred as Sue Storm - The Invisible Girl - n Marvel's action-franchise blockbuster Fantastic Four (2005), which was released by 20th Century-Fox in July 2005 and became a worldwide box-office success with over $300 million in revenue. Reprising her role, she also starred in the 2007 sequel, 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Taking on another adventurous part, Alba co-starred in Into the Blue (2005) with Paul Walker and Scott Caan, as a diver who gets into trouble after discovering a sunken plane. In Good Luck Chuck (2007), Alba tried her hand at romantic comedy, opposite Dane Cook. Neither effort fared well with critics nor attracted much of an audience. Continuing to branch out, Alba starred in The Eye (2008), a remake of a Japanese horror film. She played a musician who receives an eye transplant, which produces some unwanted side effects. Returning to comedy, Alba landed a part in the Mike Myers film The Love Guru (2008).
Jessica was part of Garry Marshall's all-star ensemble romantic comedy, Valentine's Day (2010), which broke box-office records with the largest opening on a four-day President's Day weekend in history. She starred opposite Casey Affleck and Kate Hudson in director Michael Winterbottom's controversial screen adaptation of The Killer Inside Me (2010), based on Jim Thompson's novel, as well as Robert Rodriquez's Machete (2010).
She co-starred in the third installment of the hit Meet the Parents franchise Little Fockers (2010), as well as the 4D family adventure Spy Kids 4-D: All the Time in the World (2011), marking her third of five collaborations with Robert Rodriguez. Jessica was part of an all-star voice cast for The Weinstein Company's animated adventure, Escape from Planet Earth (2012), also featuring Sarah Jessica Parker, Brendan Fraser, and James Gandolfini.
Alba went on to star in the action-comedy Barely Lethal (2015), the spooky The Veil (2016), and the thriller Mechanic: Resurrection (2016), though only the last made any noise at the box office. She then made a long-awaited return to television in 2019 with L.A.'s Finest, co-starring with Gabrielle Union in this offshoot of the Bad Boys films.
In 2012, Alba also started her own company, The Honest Company, selling a collection of household goods, diapers, and body care products. The company, however, took another 3 years to fully launch as she initially struggled to find business partners. The company launched with a pretty huge line-up of 17 products, a massive undertaking for a new business. It's now valued at over $1.7 billion.

Religion
Aside from her born-again Christian parents, Alba also grew up under the care of her grandparents who were very religious Catholics. However, during her teenage years, she became rebellious and stopped attending evangelical mass, and left the church. The church’s way of treating women is one of the factors that made her uncomfortable, so, with this, she decided to abandoned religion but still considers herself as spiritual. However, even after abandoning her roots, Alba vowed respect for her heritage by turning down roles that would require her to go nude as she believes that it is against the religious belief of her family.
Politics
Alba is very politically active. She donates money and is active in a wide range of political causes, including Obama’s 2008 campaign. She also supported Joe Biden in 2020.
Views
Jessica Alba has been an active supporter of various charitable organizations including Clothes Off Our Back, Habitat for Humanity, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Project HOME, RADD, Revlon Run/Walk for Women, SOS Children Villages, Soles4Souls and Step up. She is also a strong supporter of gay rights and serves as an ambassador of the 1Goal movement, providing free education to children in Africa.
Jessica Alba has been standing up for women's rights for a long time. In many of her interviews and posts, she always encourages women to share their unfiltered experiences as women in this modern era, to fight against sex trafficking, rape, forced prostitution, and for women to support each other.
Quotations:
"To me, box office is the most important thing. If the movie makes money, then I'm fine."
"My theory is that if you look confident, you can pull off anything - even if you have no clue what you're doing."
"Every business faces its challenges…It's not realistic to think otherwise. If nothing else, it brings out the best in the team. It's important at that point to be open with the consumer and educate them around the realities of creating a product in bulk."
Personality
While filming Flipper in Australia, Alba received a series of threatening calls, part of a plot against her. She was eventually kidnapped from the show’s set. Later that same day she was found physically unharmed in the trunk of a car.
Despite the fact that she has appeared on multiple Most Beautiful People round-ups and Sexiest Actress lists, she’s a notoriously modest person. She even has a no-nudity clause in her contracts, joking that she doesn’t want her grandparents to see her boobs.
In 2006, she appeared on the cover of Playboy magazine without her consent. The magazine stated that she had topped a Sexiest Actress list it created, but she wasn’t having it; she slapped the mag with a lawsuit. She insisted the magazine halt sales of the issue.
For her, it wasn’t that the picture was inappropriate, but it suggested that (as many cover models had in the past) she had posed naked inside the magazine (which she had not). She eventually dropped the case after Playboy founder and owner Hugh Hefner personally apologized and generously donated to charities of her choice.
