The first detection of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of a planet outside the solar system, the first image of an exoplanet by JWST, the first image of an exoplanet ever taken at deep infrared wavelength, the first detection of silicate clouds in the atmosphere of planetary-mass companion...., the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is ushering in new era in the study of exoplanets.

(Using appropriate enzymes, researchers removed ABO blood ...)
Using appropriate enzymes, researchers removed ABO blood group antigens from donor kidney and lung ex-vivo, to overcome ABO blood group mismatch. This approach can solve organ shortage by improving availability of donor organs for transplantation considerably and make the process of organ allocation fairer and more efficient.

(Scientists have replicated the natural process of mammali...)
Scientists have replicated the natural process of mammalian embryonic development in the laboratory up to the point of development of brain and heart. Using stem cells, the researchers created synthetic mouse embryo outside uterus that recapitulated natural process of development in the womb up to the day 8.5. This is a milestone in synthetic biology. In future, this will guide studies on human synthetic embryo which in turn which could usher in development and production of synthetic organs for patients awaiting transplants.

(Extinction and evolution of new species have gone hand in...)
Extinction and evolution of new species have gone hand in hand since life began on Earth however there have been at least five episodes of very large-scale extinctions of life-forms in the past 500 million years. In these episodes, more than three-fourth of the existing species got eliminated. They are referred to as global extinction or mass extinction.

thylacine (commonly known as Tasmanian tiger or Tasmanian wolf), a marsupial carnivore mammal indigenous to Australia that became extinct about a century ago, not due to natural process of organic evolution, but due to human influence may become de-extinct and live again in about a decade time. Last living thylacine died in 1936 but luckily, many embryos and young specimens were found suitably preserved in the museums. Thylacine genome has already been successfully sequenced using thylacine DNA extracted from 108-year-old specimen preserved at the Victoria Museum in Australia. The research team has recently tied up with a biotech firm to accelerate the efforts of resurrection.

(Chromatography and Compound specific isotope analysis of ...)
Chromatography and Compound specific isotope analysis of lipid remains in ancient pottery tell a lot about ancient food habits and culinary practices. In the last two decades, this technique has successfully been employed to unravel ancient food practices of several archaeological sites in the world. Researchers have applied this technique recently to the potteries collected from multiple archaeological sites of Indus valley civilisation. Key scientific finding was dominance of non-ruminant fats in the cooking vessels implying non-ruminant animals (such as horse, pigs, poultry, fowl, rabbit, etc) were cooked in the vessels over a long period. This contradicts long held view (based on faunal evidence) that ruminant animals (such as cattle, buffalo, deer, etc) were consumed as food by Indus valley people.

wo henipavirus, Hendra virus (HeV) and the Nipah virus (NiV) are already known to cause fatal disease in humans. Now, a novel henipavirus has been identified in febrile patients in Eastern China. Our sense of identity’ is at the core of everything we do and everything we are. A healthy mind need to be clear and convinced of ‘who we are’. The idea of ‘identity’ draws heavily from our land and geography, culture and civilisation, and history.
