Studied with Olivier Messiaen, Paris Conservatory. Private studies with René Leibowitz.
Director of Music to Jean-Louis Barrault theatre co. 1948; aided by Barrault and Madeleine Renaud Barrault he founded the Concert Marigny which later became the Domaine Musicale, Paris. Principal Guest Conductor Cleveland Symphony Orchestra 1968.
Principal Conductor BBC Symphony Orchestra 1971-1975. Musical Director New York Philharmonic 1971-1977. Director Institute de Recherches et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique since 1975.
Professor College de France since 1976. Conducted the centenary production of Wagner's Ring, Bayreuth 1976-1980. Consultant for Special Events, Orchestra National de France since 1987.
