Miranda Lambert is an American country music star and singer-songwriter. She is best known as a solo artist and is a member of the Pistol Annies (alongside Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley). Her most popular albums are 'Kerosene,' 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,' and 'Platinum.' Her recordings, along with her feisty down-home personality, resonated widely with audiences and made her a favorite of the country music establishment.
Background
Miranda Leigh Lambert was born on November 10, 1983, in Longview, Texas, United States. She is the daughter of Richard Lee Lambert and Beverly June Hughes. She grew up in Lindale, a small town where her parents ran a private detective agency. Her father was also a guitarist and songwriter, and she grew up listening to such country music greats as Merle Haggard and Guy Clark. She has one younger brother, Luke Lambert.
When her parents, Rick and Bev Lambert's, private investigation business faltered, the family was forced to relocate to a quaint farmhouse on her uncle's property. It needed a lot of help, but the family worked hard to make it livable. Eventually, the property inspired Lambert's delivery of hit song 'The House That Built Me.'
Education
Inspired by such singer-songwriters as Emmylou Harris, Miranda began writing her own songs after learning how to play the guitar from her father. She started her own band called "Texas Pride" at the age of 17 while still in high school. Focused on a career in music, Lambert graduated early from Lindale High School to pursue her dream.
At the age of 10, Miranda Lambert entered her first country music talent show. Her budding career got a boost from performing on Johnnie High's Country Music Revue, a weekly variety show in Arlington, Texas. This program helped launch the careers of several other country music stars, including LeAnn Rimes and Lee Ann Womack. Another talent contest led to her appearances in a commercial and the teen comedy 'Slap Her... She's French' (2001).
Her own family supported her efforts, helping to finance and promote her first recording, an independent self-titled CD, in 2001. Two years later, Lambert got a big break when she passed the auditions for a new country music reality show, Nashville Star. She moved to the country music capital to compete for a recording contract among other prizes.
While she didn't win, Lambert still landed a major-label contract with Sony Music after becoming the show's second runner-up. "I was hoping not to win," she said in a statement on her website. "The winner had to go in right after the contest and make a record in a couple of weeks, and I wasn't ready."
In 2004, Lambert released the single "Me and Charlie Talking," an up-tempo tale of puppy love. It was a modest hit and was soon followed by her first major-label album, 'Kerosene' (2005). After the album's release, Lambert went on tours with George Strait and Keith Urban.
Debuting at the top of the country music charts, 'Kerosene' surprised some listeners with its fiery lyrics. "I don't write about angels, Jesus, happy days, kids. I grew up on drinkin', cheatin', love gone bad," she once explained. Clearly, her songs struck a chord with the music-buying public, as the album went on to sell more than 1 million copies.
Also a hit with critics, 'Kerosene' earned several positive reviews from a variety of sources, from Rolling Stone to The New Yorker. Lambert earned several award nominations from the Academy of Country Music, including for top new female vocalist.
In 2007, Lambert had another hit album on her hands. 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend' started out at the top of the country album charts and reached as high as No. 6 on the Billboard 200. The title track became a popular hit and anthem of sorts for former girlfriends everywhere, while "Gunpowder & Lead" tells the story of a woman seeking to kill her abusive significant other. On the other side of the spectrum, Lambert appears unusually vulnerable on "More Like Her." She also reflects on her love of rural life in "Famous in a Small Town."
Along with being a strong seller, the album brought Lambert significant critical attention. 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend' won an ACM award for album of the year and garnered the artist another ACM win for top new female vocalist. Lambert also received a Grammy Award nomination (best female country vocal performance) for her single "Kerosene."
For 2009's 'Revolution,' Lambert seemed to find her romantic side with such songs as "Making Plans" and "Love Song"; she worked on the No. 1 country album with fellow country star Blake Shelton.
Miranda Lambert's lifelong devotion to her four-legged friends led her to start the MuttNation Foundation in 2009, with the goal to end pet suffering and homelessness in the United States and abroad.
Later in 2011, Lambert teamed up with Angaleena Pressley and Ashley Monroe. The trio, known as Pistol Annies, released the hit album 'Hell on Heels' in September. Lambert continued with her success as a solo act as well, releasing 'Four the Record' the same year.
One of the big winners at the 2013 ACM Awards, Miranda took home two awards for her song "Over You" and was named female vocalist of the year. Lambert's winning streak continued that November when she was named female vocalist of the year at the CMA Awards.
In 2014 Miranda released 'Platinum,' which featured such hit tracks as "Automatic" and "Somethin' Bad." The record also earned several CMA Awards, including single of the year and album of the year, and won a Grammy in 2015 for Best Country Album.
After releasing the single "Vice" in July 2016, Lambert followed with 'The Weight of These Wings' later in the year. It became her sixth album to achieve platinum certification, as well as her fifth to win album of the year honors at the ACM Awards.
Lambert rejoined Pistol Annies for the album Interstate 'Gospel,' which debuted at No. 1 on the country charts in November 2018. The following year she delivered another well-received solo effort, 'Wildcard,' which topped the country charts and featured the singles "It All Comes Out in the Wash" and "Bluebird."
With dates from her 2020 Wildcard Tour postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak, Lambert was among the stars who performed for the ACM Presents Our Country special in early April.
Lambert often wears a crucifix around her neck, re-tweets Christianity things from televangelists, and sings about God.
She isn't afraid to knock Christians when she thinks they're wrong. In a direct slam to Catholics, she once tweeted: "If your religion does not allow birth control and u have more than 4 kids... get a new religion!"
Her lyrics can be critical of Christians as well, like her song, "Heart Like Mine." She is annoyed that the faithful tell her she should live her life differently, but she thinks she'd be all right with God: 'Cause I heard Jesus, He drank wine/ I bet we'd get along just fine/ He could calm a storm and heal the blind/ And I bet He'd understand a heart like mine.'
She's not always critical of her religion, though. In the song, "Mama, I'm Alright," she asks Jesus to take care of her mother who's worried about her.
Politics
When Miranda was asked if she would ever consider writing politically-driven songs, Lambert made her thoughts clear: "I am a hundred percent believer in not ever using the platform that I’ve built for anything other than music because music to me is an escape from your own reality. I don't want to go to a show and hear somebody preach about their opinions."
Lambert believes that mixing politics and music is never a good idea. She explained that it seems like no matter which side an artist takes, they always get more backlash than positive responses:
"It's so divided [in politics], you can't win anyway - and what are you winning? For someone to agree with you, and now you've spoken your piece and pissed off many other people, just for one person to go, 'She's right'? It doesn’t do any good."
She also said: "I have my views and obviously my music has connotations that lean toward what I believe, but I've learned through other artists' mistakes that I’m never going to use my career as a platform for politics, especially at shows."
Views
Miranda Lambert supports the idea of owning and carrying a gun since she has two guns tattooed on her arm, and her breakthrough hit was titled "Gunpowder & Lead." But she never told anyone else how to think on the topic of gun control. Miranda is a big fan of the Dixie Chicks, and she learned that speaking out on politically charged topics can spell big trouble for a singer's career.
Miranda once said: "I don't want to ever use my career or this thing that I've built as a platform to sway people to my direction, because, truthfully, I don't care. I just want to believe what I believe and be happy, and people can believe what they believe. I don't ever want to push my opinion on someone because I don't want them pushing their opinion on me."
Miranda has her concealed handgun permit and uses guns for hunting, but she knows firearms aren't for everyone.
"Some people don't feel like they need guns and that's their prerogative," Miranda said. "But I do think that we should each have a choice of one or the other."
Quotations:
"My music is about being strong, even in your vulnerability."
"I also have a different, softer side, and I want for people to hear that."
"I was a big shiny, glittery-type person. Now I'm jeans and T-shirt girl, or I'll wear sundresses and cowboy boots in the summer. But at first, I had to have stylists tell me, 'That's ugly.'"
"I'm really fortunate because, in my career, I haven't had to deal with anybody trying to make me something I'm not."
"I feel like I've started to grow up and be more of a woman instead of this crazy girl."
"I like to write with people I have a relationship with; otherwise it's kind of scary, and you hold back because you don't want to pour your guts out to someone you never met."
"I think I find new idols every day - someone that says something really inspiring, is successful, has character."
"I really feel every word to every song a lot more than I have in the past."
"Yeah, I try to be the best example I can be for young girls just as far as my person goes - just to uphold a good image."

Personality
As a child, Miranda was very shy and didn't speak up at school until the fifth grade. "Miranda started off extremely shy," her mother, Bev, seconds, explaining she was called to school by teachers concerned about young Miranda's development every year until the fifth grade. "She wouldn't speak. Not a word at school. If she had to order her own food, she'd just not eat."
Lambert largely stayed that way until her freshman year of high school, when Bev put her in the debate club. "It was a full-on meltdown, sobbing, bawling, 'Come get me, I'm quitting school,'" Bev recalls. But after Lambert won her debate on Democrat vs. Republican ideals during the 1996 election, "it was the beginning of her whole life-changing.
Once she found her voice, Lambert wasn't about to silence it. "Early on, an artist told me, 'Don't be yourself. Perform and be someone else,'" Lambert remembered. "And I thought, that seems like exactly the opposite of what I should be doing. Then I had people wanting me to adjust my lyrics to be more appealing to the masses or whatever. I said, 'No, that's bullshit.' I'd rather sell four copies of something that real than 4 million copies of something that's fake."
There were also plenty of opinions about her tomboy looks, another part of herself she refused to glamorize. "For years, I'd only wear jeans, boots, and vintage T-shirts. This is who I am! Like it or lump it! I didn't want to make it all about the long hair and eyelashes and tight dresses. I didn't want to be seen. I wanted to be heard."
In May 2011 Miranda married Blake Shelton, and they became one of country music's most popular power couples. Throughout their marriage, the couple deflected persistent rumors about troubles in their relationship.
In July 2015, Lambert and Shelton announced they were getting divorced after four years of marriage. "This is not the future we envisioned," Lambert and Shelton said in a statement. "And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately. We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends, and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter."
After dating R&B singer Anderson East for two years, Miranda married New York City police officer Brendan McLoughlin on January 26, 2019.
