Wrote operas, ballet music, symphonies, cantatas and oratorios. One of the most interesting modern Soviet composers. Wrote the music for Anna Karenina in which his wife played the leading part.
Taught at the Moscow Conservatory, 1965-1969. Honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Art.
