“Distinguished by an extraordinary empathy, a feeling of one’s way into the minds of the sixteenth-century Spaniards and Indians . . . Provocative.” — New York Times “An extraordinary book. Combining rigorous historical research and profound analysis with stylistic elegance, this work allows the reader to appreciate the tragic and fabulous history of the Incan empire in all its richness and diversity. It reads like the most skillful novel.” — Mario Vargas Llosa, winner of the Nobel Prize in literature In 1532, the magnificent Inca empire was the last great civilization still isolated from the rest of humankind. The Conquest of the Incas is the definitive history of this civilization’s overthrow, from the invasion by Pizarro’s small gang of conquistadors and the Incas’ valiant attempts to expel the invaders to the destruction of the Inca realm, the oppression of its people, and the modern discoveries of Machu Picchu and the lost city of Vilcabamba. This authoritative, wide-ranging account, grounded in meticulous research and firsthand knowledge and told from the viewpoints of both protagonists, “keeps all the complex issues to the fore . . . the deeper wonder of the conquest and the deeper horror of its results” (Washington Post). “The bible for historians and archaeologists studying the final days of the Inca. For the past thirty years, The Conquest of the Incas has remained the most influential book for Inca scholars. There is no other book which is even in the same class.” — Brian S. Bauer, professor, University of Illinois at Chicago, leading archaeologist of the Inca

( A rich contribution to the understanding of Inca archae...)
A rich contribution to the understanding of Inca archaeology and architecture and an invaluable guide for visitors to Peru. The stone monuments of the Incas, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Andes, are among the most magnificent structures in the world. Originally published in 1982, Monuments of the Incas is the most comprehensive photographic and narrative study of the major sites of the Inca empire, including the famed city of Machu Picchu, the Inca town and sun temple of Ollantaytambo, the mighty temple-fortress of Sacsahuaman, and the steeply terraced ruins of Pisac. This classic book, long out of print, has now been rewritten to incorporate results from the latest archaeological excavations, discoveries about Inca masonry techniques, and updated interpretations of form and function. There are new chapters about Choquequirau, Vitcos, Chinchero, and the ruins along the famous Inca Trail. Edward Ranney’s photographs convey the extraordinary accomplishments of the Inca masons—from sheer terrace walls and stairways to striking temple buildings and sculpted rock shrines—and the grandeur of their cities. John Hemming makes brilliant use of archaeological and documentary evidence to write a compelling account of each site and to offer insights and speculations on the enigmatic ruins. 157 color, 22 b&w illustrations

In this golden age of exploration and discovery, our knowledge of this planet is being expanded as never before in human history. Discoveries like plate tectonics, desertification, the hole in the ozone layer, and the greenhouse effect have transformed our understanding of the earth and its climate. And from the mountain peaks to ocean floors, untrodden places are being explored for the very first time. The Golden Age of Discovery is a photographic tribute to the adventures, dangers, hardships, and accomplishments of modern expeditions. It also includes profiles of noted explorers as well as features on the main fields of sporting exploration, and John Hemming's text is dramatically enhanced with 200 color photos and maps from around the world. John Hemming was Director of the Royal Geographic Society for more than two decades.

(In the 16th century the King of Spain issued his soldiers...)
In the 16th century the King of Spain issued his soldiers with a three pronged mission: to find gold, spread the word of Christianity and claim new territories for Spain. The conquistadors, as they became known, set off into the world to do just that, and nothing was to stand in their way. Their amazing journeys took them from Florida to Machu Picchu via the Amazon and Lake Titicaca. Their epic voyages revolutionised world geography and society was transformed by the bizarre foods they brought back - potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, pineapple, tobacco and chocolate, as well as exotic human freight. However, there is a much darker side to the story, for as the King of Spain sat in his court watching Mexican jugglers, his blood-stained emissaries massacred Aztec warriors, raping, branding and enslaving their women and murdering their kings in the name of religion. They spread European diseases such as smallpox, malaria and typhoid, decimating the local populations with tens of millions dying in their wake.

Amazon Frontier covers the 150 years when the first European scientists expolred the natural riches of Amazonia and became fascinated by its tribal peoples. Exciting and murderous encounters with new tribes continued throughout the nineteenth century, particularly when the Amazon's rubber monopoly made Manaus a frontier boom town. However, the Indian population, once so feared by the Europeans, began to decline and they became little more than objects of anthropological study or romantic literature. John Hemming ends his account in 1910 with the creation of Brazil's famous Indian Protection Service, a subject he resumes in Die If You Must

( The finance sector of Western economies is too large an...)
The finance sector of Western economies is too large and attracts too many of the smartest college graduates. Financialization over the past three decades has created a structure that lacks resilience and supports absurd volumes of trading. The finance sector devotes too little attention to the search for new investment opportunities and the stewardship of existing ones, and far too much to secondary-market dealing in existing assets. Regulation has contributed more to the problems than the solutions. Why? What is finance for? John Kay, with wide practical and academic experience in the world of finance, understands the operation of the financial sector better than most. He believes in good banks and effective asset managers, but good banks and effective asset managers are not what he sees. In a dazzling and revelatory tour of the financial world as it has emerged from the wreckage of the 2008 crisis, Kay does not flinch in his criticism: we do need some of the things that Citigroup and Goldman Sachs do, but we do not need Citigroup and Goldman to do them. And many of the things done by Citigroup and Goldman do not need to be done at all. The finance sector needs to be reminded of its primary purpose: to manage other people’s money for the benefit of businesses and households. It is an aberration when the some of the finest mathematical and scientific minds are tasked with devising algorithms for the sole purpose of exploiting the weakness of other algorithms for computerized trading in securities. To travel further down that road leads to ruin.

This text tell a story of genocide, European ruthlessness and Indian gullibility. In the 16th century the history of the Brazilian Indians was the history of Brazil itself. There were millions of natives living in the half of South America that is now Brazil but since its conquest the native peoples of South America have diminished and declined. In this book, Hemming - author of "The Amazon Frontier" which continues the story of the Brazilian Indians - tells the grim and tragic story of the beginning of that decline.

(Fourth entry in the now-classic series. From all that Tr...)
Fourth entry in the now-classic series. From all that Travis McGee could gather, it must have been one hell of a party. Four languid days and all the booze they could drink - ten playful people swinging wild and free, getting drunk, getting bored, changing partners in the warmth of sun and naked bodies, miles from civilization. Miles from civilization, but only 300 feet from a very good camera with a telephoto lens. The star attraction was a woman named Lysa Dean. It was a blackmail setup as old as the hills. McGee did not want to touch it with a ten-foot pole - except there was another woman involved, a longing, tender woman whose life was slowly draining away to disaster.
