(An entertaining book that breaks new scholarly ground, Th...)
An entertaining book that breaks new scholarly ground, The Rise and Fall of Merry England explores the rituals which marked the passage of the year in late medieval and early modern England. Treating both religious and secular rituals, and both popular and elite ones, Hutton tells how they altered over time in response to political, religious, and social change. He also addresses some key issues in English history: the character and pace of the Reformation; the context of beloved writers like Ben Jonson and Robert Herrick; the origins of the science of folklore; and the impact of the English Revolution. A comprehensive work that breaks several frontiers, this highly readable book will delight all those interested in English history and folklore.

(FIRST EDITION, FIRST PUBLISHED, 1964. Perpetua Books, pub...)
FIRST EDITION, FIRST PUBLISHED, 1964. Perpetua Books, publisher. Contains black and white illustrations. Authors, Alex Atkinson & Ronald Searle. Total 105 pages. Approximate size of book is 7.50 x 10. The spine is tight, the pages are clean and free of any markings, no torn pages. The black boards of the book has a gold embossed emblem of a man on a bike on the front. Gold lettering on the spine. The dust jacket is red and black, very interesting with an eyecatching woman dancing on a table top. The corners of the jacket are rubbed and has several tiny tears, the corners are lightly bumped by shelf wear most likely. If it were not for the condition of the dust jacket, this book would be considered very good. The pages are lightly tanned due to aging and may have some tiny age spots here and there on the inside boards, not too noticeable and very light. This is a book that a collectible person may enjoy adding to their collections. This book speaks of "the legend of Mrs. Dyson's acrobatic manoeuvres on the end of a convenient Iiana has been painfully embodied into local folk-lore." "We have to admit, in this instance, that the Amazon in question was about six feet tall, blode, horribly healthy and given over to free love as even Ingmar Bergman has shrunk from depicting it. But not Atkinson and Searle. However, suffice it to say that what these intrepid non travellers did for Russian and America, but not going there, they now do for some handy bits of Europe. Not only do they reveal the rather horrible gastronomic secrets of the French Routiers, at the risk of being splashed with Potage Du Jour, they also note down with the courage the intimate and revealing pattern of Primitive Nordic Orgies, and plod on to proble secrets surrounding the nocturnal habits of Spanish Castanet Turners." Quite a book and read indeed for mature people!!! Out of print book. B0000CMBCH. *3BC5

( In 1939, as an art student, Ronald Searle volunteered f...)
In 1939, as an art student, Ronald Searle volunteered for the army, embarking for Singapore in 1941. Within a month of his arrival there, however, he became a prisoner of the Japanese, and after 14 months in a prisoner-of-war camp, was sent north to a work camp on the Burma Railway. In May 1944, he was sent to the notorious Changi Gaol in Singapore and became one of the few British soldiers to survive imprisonment there. Throughout his captivity, despite the risk, Ronald Searle made drawings to record his experiences. The drawings in this remarkable book were hidden by Searle and smuggled from place to place, stained with the sweat and dirt of his captivity. They are a record of one man’s war and are among the most important and moving accounts of the second World War.

(This lighthearted look at the secrets of the world's wine...)
This lighthearted look at the secrets of the world's wine ceremonies invites vintners and wine drinkers to experience the mysteries of wine and its production. Illustrated in Searle's inimitable style are the ancient noble ceremony of slashing the trockenbeerenauslese, the inauguration of the first authentic denominazione di origine controllata e garantita, and the vinolympics. For wine lovers who have never tasted ptolemy nouveau or watched the uncorking of the kangarouge, these experiences are related with warmth and humor. The many ways to open a bottle of wine are illustrated, and the rituals and delights of wine around the world are described.

( As any, even vaguely addicted book collector will have ...)
As any, even vaguely addicted book collector will have swiftly learned, most booksellers' catalogues are written in a parallel language that can fool anyone but the 'cognoscenti' and which makes the mysteries of the Rosetta stone, or Linear B, look like something out of Enid Blython. Without a smattering of inside information, the baffled but hopelessly-bitten book buyer is drifting unarmed and unprepared into a minefield whose perilous complexities will usually only be made plain when an eagerly awaited parcel of dream volumes arrives and mangled contents are revealed in all their deceptive glory.... But all is not lost. Help is at hand! After a lifetime of avidly scanning the frequently poisonously-tinted pages of innumerable book catalogues, Ronald Searle has become expert in the art of decoding those esoteric, poetic and usually approximate, descriptions of literary come-ons. Now, licking his wounds, he publishes his hard-earned findings in this fully illustrated pioneer guide, designed to foil the devious machinations of scheming and wicked booksellers for ever more. No longer will the innocent book collector need to puzzle over the finer meaning of 'old half road', 'good working copy', blind tooled', or 'tail-edged shaved'. The unvarnished truth is here exposed at last, both in the shocking explicit drawings and in the devastatingly frank glossary whose revelations will startle even the most battle-scarred of bibliophiles. The result is one of the funniest, most entertaining books to have emerged from the brilliantly perceptive pen of the master. No book collector, and certainly no bookseller, can afford to be without it - even the wicked ones.

(What happens when the Marquis de Sade meets Goody Two-Sho...)
What happens when the Marquis de Sade meets Goody Two-Shoes? Or Kafka meets Lewis Carroll? Or Babar meets Hannibal? Or, more dramatically, Mishima meets Vincent van Gogh? Ronald Searle has vividly imagined just what would occur when the paths of two famous characters momentarily cross. In this definitive collection the results are cunningly penned, in intricate detail, by one of the greatest exponents of cartoon art.

From the back cover: "When one has touched bottom, become the lowest of the low and unwillingly plumbed the depths of human misery, there comes from it a silent understanding and appreciation of what solidarity, friendship and human kindness to others can mean. Something that is difficult to explain to those unfortunates who are on the outside of our 'club", who have never experienced what it means to be dirt and yet be privileged to be surrounded by life-saving comradeship." (In Virginia City and its Comstock Lode, miners worked one...)
In Virginia City and its Comstock Lode, miners worked one of the richest deposits of gold and silver ever found. Many places claim that title, but the precious metals retrieved between 1859 and 1880, with an equivalent value today in the billions of dollars, played an unprecedented role in industrial history. With cutting-edge technology, Comstock engineers shaped mining throughout the world for the next 50 years. Virginia City’s wealth propelled several people to Congress and others into the nation’s highest society. At the same time, those who settled in the mining district built a civilized, sophisticated place. Drawing on former glories, the popular television series Bonanza perpetuated the legend, capturing international audiences with 14 seasons of programs. As one of the nation’s largest historic landmarks, the Comstock continues to welcome millions of visitors.
