Achievements include along with surgeon Patrick Steptoe, successfully pioneering conception through in-vitro fertilization (in vitro fertilisation), which led to the birth of the first test-tube baby, Louise Brown, on 25 July 1978. This scientific breakthrough laid the groundwork for further innovations such as intracytoplasmatic sperm injection, embryo biopsy and stem cell research.
