Natalie Dormer Edit Profile

actress

Natalie Dormer is an English actress. She is best known for her roles as Anne Boleyn on the Showtime series The Tudors (2007-10), as Margaery Tyrell on the HBO series Game of Thrones (2012-14), Irene Adler on the CBS series Elementary (2013-15), and as Cressida in the science-fiction adventure films The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014) and Part 2 (2015).

Background

Natalie Dormer was born on February 11, 1982, in Reading, Berkshire. Her mother, Claire Richards, is a housewife and her father, Gary Dormer, was a computer programmer and is now retired. Natalie has a brother, Mark, and a sister, Samantha.

Education

During her childhood, Dormer was interested in many activities, such as dancing, fencing, and public speaking. She described herself as the most likely to succeed in academic life in her family.

She attended the ‘Chiltern Edge Secondary School’ and later moved to the ‘Reading Blue Coat School.’ She was a good student and even became the vice-captain of the school’s netball team and a member of the public-speaking team. Despite all this, she once stated that she had been a victim of bullying in school. She also took dance classes at the ‘Allenova School of Dancing,’ but that turned out to be just a hobby later.

She had earned a chance to study at ‘Cambridge,’ provided she performed well in a series of exams. Unfortunately, because she misread one of the questions, she did not manage to get an A in her A-level history exam. With ‘Cambridge’ out of the picture, she turned her attention to drama schools and ended up at the ‘Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art’ in London. She made her stage debut with ‘The Comedy of Errors.’

Career

Six months after graduating from Webber Douglas, Dormer won the role of Victoria in 'Casanova.' This was her film debut and it was released in 2005. The director, Lasse Hallström, was so impressed with Dormer's comedic timing that he had the scriptwriter expand her part. In 2005, Dormer had a small part in 'Distant Shores.' Following this, she was unemployed for a while. As a result, she had to take temporary jobs as a waitress and a data entry operator to make a living. She considered that a life lesson and fought to get back to acting jobs.

The first big step in her career came in 2007 when she was chosen to play ‘Anne Boleyn’ in ‘The Tudors.’ The series earned her many good reviews and some controversial opinions. At the end of the second season, her character died. Following this, the ‘Boston Herald’ noted, “her departure from The Tudors leaves a tremendous void.”

In 2008, her career continued to advance, as she was cast in ‘Agatha Christie’s Marple: ‘Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?’ and in ‘City of Life.’ Then in 2010, she appeared on stage at the ‘Young Vic,’ in the play ‘Sweet Nothing,’ which pleased the critics and improved her professional image. Around the same period, she appeared in Madonna’s film ‘W.E,’ which featured her as the ‘Duchess of York.’ She also appeared in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger.’

Another huge breakthrough came in 2012 when she got the role of ‘Margaery Tyrell’ in the extremely popular series ‘Game of Thrones.’ She delivered a great performance every season, until 2016, and even won the ‘EWwy Award’ (now known as the ‘Poppy Award’) for the ‘Best Supporting Actress – Drama’ for her performance in the third season. Interestingly, she had originally auditioned for another part and got rejected. They offered her the part of ‘Margaery Tyrell’ instead.

Natalie is also interested in audio stories, as she participated in the radio play ‘Neverwhere.’ She also continues to act on stage, as she did in 2012 when she returned to the ‘Young Vic’ to perform in ‘After Miss Julie,’ which was a big success in the eyes of critics and the public.

Some of her most notable projects are ‘Rush,’ ‘The Counselor,’ and ‘Elementary.’ She is also known for her appearance as ‘Cressida’ in ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay.’ She also delivered great performances in ‘The Scandalous Lady W,’ ‘The Professor and the Madman’ and ‘The Forest.’

Natalie Dormer voiced the character ‘Margaery Tyrell’ in the video game based on the series ‘Game of Thrones.’ She also lent her voice to the character ‘Dr. Lexi T’Perro’ in the video game ‘Mass Effect: Andromeda.’

In September 2014, Deadline Hollywood announced that Dormer has been cast in Screen Gems' action thriller Patient Zero, alongside Matt Smith and Game of Thrones co-star John Bradley-West. In May 2018, Dormer starred as a blind pianist in revenge thriller In Darkness which she also co-wrote.

Following her previous audio work on Neverwhere, in August 2018 it was announced that Dormer would narrate the audiobook for Pottermore Publishing’s Harry Potter: A History of Magic. Of the role, Dormer commented that she had “always adored the Harry Potter books” and it was "fun to join the wizarding world family."

Religion

Natalie Dormer is an atheist who has no problem sharing her lack of religious views. During an interview in 2007 she said, “I say I’m an atheist but I wouldn’t mind being visited by a ghost.”

Politics

On World Humanitarian Day in 2016, Dormer gave a speech at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. The event aimed to highlight the plight of refugees around the world. Dormer specifically highlighted the violence suffered by women and girls and called for men and boys to be engaged in the conversation.

Views

Dormer identifies as a feminist, saying "it upsets me that the younger generation of women think it’s a dirty word, and associate it with a kind of militantism or a sense of female superiority. It's not. It just means liberation, and equality."

Dormer has expressed a desire to stay away from social media and a fear of being taken out of context online, highlighting that she has often been misquoted regarding controversial elements of her career. Regarding discussions relating to her nude appearances in television and film, Dormer has said, "To set the record straight, I have never been comfortable doing sex or nude scenes. Are you joking? How many people would be? My job specification is finding motivation in the text. I’ve turned down roles this year that have involved sex, solely because of the way I’ve been misrepresented. I’m so terrified at the moment of perpetuating that clickbait image of me."

Dormer has run the London Marathon twice; first in support of Barnardo’s in 2014 and then in 2016 for Childline.

In 2017, Dormer visited Tanzania with the development and humanitarian organisation Plan International. The visit was part of a drive to ban child marriage in the country.

Quotations: "For me, it's not necessarily interesting to play a strong, fearless woman. It's interesting to play a woman who is terrified and then overcomes that fear. It's about the journey. Courage is not the absence of fear, it's overcoming it."

"I have been to Canada several times. It was autumn when I visited Vancouver, and I will always remember the colour of the trees in British Columbia were stunning."

"What makes me really happy is a walk in the English countryside. A nice sunset, that British countryside - it means I'm home."

"I love going out of my comfort zone - I live to go out of my comfort zone."

"The most amazing set where I've shot 'Game of Thrones' is definitely Croatia, in Dubrovnik. It's such a stunning country with lots of good watersports there as well. Just a beautiful, beautiful place."

"Famously, Anne Boleyn was not a beauty: she was more about quirkiness and an innate sensuality, and there are a lot of references to her eyes. Which sends out a great message for women, because life is not about the aesthetic all the time."
