1954-1958 - studied at St. Teresa school
Jesuit high school of Our Lady Fátima in Dare.
1962-1964 - the lyceum of Dr. Francisco Vieira.
In 1968 he joined up in the army and after three years he obtained the rank of corporal.
On May 1975 he joined the revolutionary front for independence of the East Timor (FRETILIN).
In 1987 Xanana proclaimed FALINTIL the national army. As a result of the policy of the national unity the National council of the resistance of mauberan people was created (CNRM) and Gusmão became its leader.
In April 1998 instead of the the National council of the resistance of mauberan people (CNRM) more wide public non-partisan organization was created - the National council of the resistance of East Timor (CNRT). Xanana Gusmão was elected the head of it unanimously.
In 2000 a transitional cabinet consisting of the members of UNAMET and CNRT was created. Xanana was elected the head of temporary national parliament. In March 2002 he left the post of the Speaker and he announced that he would run for president of the country. In April 2002 Xanana was elected president by the majority of votes.
A follower of the ideas of market economy, attraction of foreign investments, inviolability of private property, openness and accountability of state apparatus, import substitution, creating new work places, development of inner infrastructure and struggle against poverty.
