Xavi followed his father’s footsteps, Joaquim Hernandez, who played for Sabasell in the first division. Xavi graduated from Barcelona’s La Masia Football Academy. Since 1991he has been regular at the Camp Nou Stadium.
Xavi’s debuted as a member of the senior team was on 18 August 1998 in the Super Cup Final in which he scored a goal. In La Liga Xavi appeared for the first time on 3 October 1998 in the match against Valencia FC. Hernandez finished his debut season with 27 matches played and 3 goals scored.
On March 2002 Xavi scored his first goal in El Clasico (The Classics) against Real Madrid FC.
In the 2004-05 season Xavi became vice-captain and push the Catalans to win La Liga and Spanish Supercup.
The season 2008-09 was rich for victories. He with Barcelona FC won the Copa del Rey (King’s Cup) in the final of which Xavi scored a goal. Then 6-2 El Clasico victory went . Xavi assisted 4 of 6 goals. Another tournament won by Barcelona FC was the 2009 Champions League after which was recognized as UEFA Champions League best midfielder. The summer of 2008 was also significant for Xavi and Spanish National team: UEFA European Championship was conquered.
On June 2010 Xavi agreed to sign a new 4-year contract with Barcelona FC which may be automatically renewed up to 30 June 2016 based on number of games played. However it wasn’t the most significant event of that summer. Spanish National Team won the World Cup for the first time in the history of football.
In 2012 Spanish National Team won the UEFA European Championship after the final of which he became the first player to register assists in two European Cup finals. With his victory in UEFA Euro 2012, Xavi became the most successful player in Spanish Football History.
Nowadays Xavi is considered to be one of the best midfielders of the football history. He wears number 6 in Barcelona FC as well as in Spanish National Team.
Xavi doesn’t talk about his own religious practices. However he's supposed to be Catholic as the vast majority of Spaniards are Catholics. But even if he’s not very religious, he still believes in God. He said in an interview that playing football was 'a talent that God gave me'.
Xavi is not a political person but he hopes football can keep people's minds off the debt crisis.
