David Ho is a Taiwanese-American medical doctor and HIV/AIDS researcher.
Background
David Ho was born on November 3, 1952 in Taichung, Taiwan; the son of Paul and Sonia Ho. His father, who had worked in China as a translator for United States troops during World War II, immigrated to the United States in the mid-1950s. When David was 12 years old, he moved with his mother and younger brother to California to reunite with his father.
Education
David Ho attended Taichung Municipal Guang-Fu Elementary School until sixth grade before immigrating to the United States. He attended and graduated from John Marshall High School in Los Angeles, California. He received his bachelor of science in physics with highest honors from the California Institute of Technology, 1974 and Doctor of Medicine from the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, 1978.
Career
David did his clinical training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine, 1978-1982 and Massachusetts General Hospital, 1982-1985. He was a resident in internal medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles in 1981.
David Ho has been actively engaged in AIDS research for 20 years. His work has influenced the understanding, investigation and treatment of HIV/AIDS worldwide. After attending Harvard Medical School, D. Ho began conducting research at Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital, and soon proved that, contrary to previous thinking, once the AIDS virus (HIV) enters the body, it reproduces itself in massive quantities almost immediately. In 1990, he became director of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center, based in New York City.
Nowadays he is the founding Scientific Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center and the Irene Diamond Professor at The Rockefeller University. David Ho is also an honorary professor at both Peking Union Medical College and Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Currently, he serves on the Board of Overseers of Harvard University and Board of Trustees of the California Institute of Technology. He also heads a consortium of organizations in China and the United States, working to address the crisis of HIV-AIDS in China.
