Background
Princess Birgitta was born to Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Birgitta was the second of the couple’s five children – four daughters and one son. The Princess and her siblings spent their childhood at Haga Palace, with the residence giving the four sisters a group nickname – “The Haga Princesses”.
In May 1961, Princess Birgitta married Johann Georg Carl Leopold Eitel-Friedrich Meinrad Maria Hubertus Michael, Prince of Hohenzollern in a civil ceremony at the Royal Palace of Stockholm, before a religious ceremony at Sankt Johann Church in Sigmaringen. Because she married a fellow royal, Princess Birgitta retained her Swedish style, HRH (unlike her sisters, who lost the style upon marriage to commoners). The couple have three children, two sons and a daughter. Birgitta converted to the Catholic Church when she married the Hohenzollern prince and thus she and her children have been ineligible for succession to the Swedish throne even when new constitutional regulations took effect in Sweden in 1979 and 1980.
The Princess currently lives in Mallorca, Spain. She has been separated from her husband since 1990, although the couple has chosen not to divorce. She lives on the island of Mallorca in Spain, while her husband lives in Munich and is an art expert, the director of a museum and board member of Christies.
