Chiluba began his professional career as chief of staff before becoming assistant accountant at Atlas Copco, a copper mining company based in Ndola.He joins the Union National Union of Building, Engineering and General Workers (National Union of NUBEGW or Personal buildings, engineers and general staff) and rises rapidly in the hierarchy of the union before he was elected general secretary of the union.
Frederick Chiluba was married twice and has nine children with his first wife Vera Tembo. Divorced in 2000 and married again on May 6, 2002 to Regina Mwanza.
