Educated at Geneva, and Magdalen College, Oxford
he filled successively diplomatic positions in Denmark, Germany, France, and Holland. He retired to England in 1597, and devoted the remainder of his life to the restoration and extension of the university library at Oxford. The library, opened in 1602, was the first public library in Europe.
