Background
Athelberht, king of Kent, established them at Canterbury, and was himself publicly baptized. On Christmas Day 597, over 10,000 persons were baptized, probably in the Swale, by the "First Archbishop of the English." Unsuccessful efforts to secure Catholic unity with the Celtic bishops and the constitution of a hierarchy for the Saxon Church occupied Augustine's last years.
