Bourgeois is remembered for his efforts in the cause of international peace and for his active interest in social reform movements, labor legislation, and social insurance programs.
Background
He was the first French plenipotentiary at The Hague in 1899, and in 1903 he was appointed a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. After World War I he was a strong supporter of the League of Nations. He became a member of the League Council, and later served in the Assembly, where he headed the French delegation.
Education
He studied for the law, but soon decided to follow a political career.
Career
During the period of the Third Republic he held many high public offices.
Politics
In 1895 he formed the first Radical Party ministry which soon fell over the issue of whether the Senate could veto a supply bill.
