Eugène Louis Boudin was born on July 12, 1824 in Honfleur, France. He was a son of a harbor pilot. Boudin lived most of his life in the north of France and briefly in Belgium.
Eugène studied painting in Le Havre and later in Paris under the guidance of Eugene Isabey, a noted marine painter.
Early in his life, Boudin worked at his father's stationery store and some time later, he opened his own small shop. At that time, the painter got acquainted with other painters, such as Jean-Baptiste Isabey and Thomas Couture, who encouraged him to follow an artistic career. At the age of twenty two, Boudin became a full-time painter.
In 1857, Eugène met Claude Monet, who would later persuade him to become a landscape painter. Two years later, in 1959, Boudin held his first solo exhibition at Paris Salon. During that time, Charles Baudelaire, who introduced Boudin's works to the public, played an important role in Eugèn's life.
In 1861, Boudin divided his time between Paris in winter and the Normandy coast in summer. To earn extra cash, he painted tourists on the beach.
In 1873, the painter took part in the first Impressionist exhibition. Financial success came in 1881 with the art dealer Paul Durand Ruel, who bought his work. Also, since 1870's, Boudin traveled extensively, visiting such countries, as Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy.
Despite the fact, that Boudin was a prolific painter, it was only in the 1880's, when he received significant professional recognition.
In 1881, Boudin received a third place medal at the Paris Salon. Some time later, in 1889, he attained a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle. In 1892, he was made a knight of the Legion of Honour.
The artist's works are kept in the collections of numerous institutions and museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the National Gallery in London, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Philadelphia Museum of Art and others.

Quotations:
"Anything painted directly, on the spot, always has a strength, a power, a lively touch that is lost in the studio. Your first impression is the right one. Stick to it and refuse to budge."
"To steep oneself in the sky. To capture the tenderness of the clouds. To let the cloud masses float in the background, far off in the gray mist, and then make the blue blaze forth."
"I am a loner, a daydreamer who has been content to remain in his part of the world and look at the sky. The future will treat me as it does all of us. I am very much afraid it may be oblivion."
"I have too often contented myself with being a hasty improviser: I have spent too much time exploring fleeting effects of the sky and sea."
Boudin was a sane, careful craftsman with a serene vision of the world.
Eugène Boudin married Marie-Anne Gédès on January 14, 1863. For more than 30 years, they lived in poverty.
