Dr. Grau San MartínMartin governed with the advice of a commission of university students in the difficult days from September 1933 to January 1934. Because of the radical nature of his regime, it was not recognized by the United States. He returned to his medical work and teaching in the university, as well as continuing his political activities, and he was again elected to the presidency for the term 1944-1948. By that time Cuba had returned to comparative normalcy and his administration, while stormy, advanced the country's industrial and educational life. In 1954 Dr. Grau San MartínMartin again ran for president but withdrew before the election and charged the Batista regime with intimidating the voters and with falsifying ballots. He remained in Cuba in retirement after the Castro revolution.
