Background
Eastern Church ecclesiastic, whose surname signifies "Miracle Worker," was born of pagan parents at Neocaesarea, Asia Minor. Becoming a pupil of Origen at Caesarea, Palestine, Gregory was converted to Christianity.
He returned to his native city in 238 and was consecrated bishop. The flock of Christians entrusted to him grew steadily, despite the Decian persecution, plague, and barbarian invasion. It is certain that he performed wonders, but certain miracles ascribed to him, such as moving a mountain, have not been verified.
