Aulus began his "Attic Nights", a miscellany in twenty books, of which all but the eighth and the latter part of the twentieth are extant. Quite unsystematically, though accurately, Gellius presents extracts from earlier authors concerning language and literature, law and custom, and science and philosophy. His interest in Latin usage is especially strong and he often employs dialogue to reveal the critical opinions of contemporary authors.
