Hubert De was born on May 12, 1243.
He fought bravely for John in France, and it was on his advice that the king granted the Magna Carta in 1215. He was appointed justiciar in the same year, and in 1216 defended Dover Castle against the attack by Louis VIII of France. With ships from the Cinque Ports in 1217 he decisively defeated the French fleet commanded by Eustace the Monk, off Dover, bringing reinforcements for the French, and the invasion of England was abandoned. From 1219 de Burgh held almost supreme power in England, and in 1227 he was created Earl of Kent. However, he had to cope with the hostility of the Poitevin, Peter des Roches, and a body of English nobles who were jealous of his influence and wealth. Finally, King Henry III turned against him, and in 1232 de Burgh was dismissed from his offices. He took refuge in the sanctuary at Bury St. Edmunds, but was forcibly removed and kept in strict confinement until released on sureties tendered by the king's brother and three earls. In 1233 he was again imprisoned, but in 1234 his possessions were reinstated. He died May 12, 1243.
