Served apprenticeship as a civil engineer in Edinburgh. Travelled in Italy before settling down. Sketches commended by artists in Rome.
Adopted Art as a profession, 1870. Studied in Royal Scottish Academy School. Practised etching, both original and interpretative, in addition to painting, and more recently has turned his attention to mural decoration.
