1917 began his career with the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission Against Counterrevolution, Sabotage and Speculation and was soon appointed head, operations department of a Moscow Rayon, then deputy chairman, Moscow Extraordinary Commission Against Counterrevolution, Sabotage and Speculation. May 1920 head, Southeastern Front’s Rear Administration, then head, Special Section, All-Ukraine Extraordinary Commission Against Counterrevolution, Sabotage and Speculation. 1921 head, Special Section, Tambov Military district.
Helped suppress the Antonov peasant revolt. 1923-1927 head, Moscow GPU Administrator 1927 involved in coal industry of the Donets Basin on special orders to increase the coal output.
Organized the Donbass Coal Trust and, by incredibly ruthless methods, boosted coal output. 1929-1938 with People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs Centr Administration in Moscow, then with the Intelligence Section ot the General Staff. September 1942 helped organize the General Staff for Partisan Warfare and Diversion.
From December 1942 head, State Security Section of Soviet Army Smersb (Death to Spies). 1946 appointed Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Ministry of State Security. 1951 vanished from the political scene, December 1954 publicly tried in Leningrad on charges of falsifying the so-called ’’Leningrad Case” and other court cases, also of using "criminal interrogation methods”.
