From 1904 secretary, Kazan’ (Russian Social-Democratic Workers ’Party (Bolsheviks) Committee. 1905 arrested and exiled to Astrakhan’ Province. 1906-1907 and 1911-1918 abroad after his sentence of exile was commuted to deportation.
1918-1920 worked for the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic People's Commissariat of Education. 1920-1929 deputy head, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic Centr Records Board. 1928-1931 deputy director, Institute of Lenin, simultaneously director, Institute of Red Professor and member, Communist Academy.
1931-1939 director, Institute of MarxEngels-Lenin. Simultaneously director, Institute of Philosophy, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. From 1939 chief cd, Institute of Marx-Engels-Lenin.
Worked on the history of Marxism. Helped prepare Lenin’s works for publication. Also edited 15 volume of the works of Marx and Engels.
