1918 volunteer in Red Navy, starting as signalman. From 1932 served with the Staff of the Black Sea Fleet. 1937-1938 counsellor, then chief naval counsellor to commander of the Spanish Republic Navy.
1939-1941 commander, Baltic Naval Base. Chief, Operations Board, Main Headquarters, USSR Navy. 1941-1945 deputy chief, then chief of General Staff, USSR Navy.
Chief of staff, USSR Pacific Fleet. After World War 2 head, and during last years of his life consulting professor, USSR Naval Academy. Fought in Civil Wars in Russia and Spain, in Soviet-Finnish, Soviet-German Wars and in campaign against Japan.
January 1947 unwarrantedly charged with divulging military secrets and sentenced to long-term imprisonment. After Stalin’s death rehabilitated and reinstated in USSR Navy.
