1895-1900 retained at eye diseases clinic in Moscow University, where he worked under Professor Associate of Arts Kryukov. 1900-1903 intern, 1904-1935 chief physician, Alekseyev City Eye Hospital, Moscow. Director, Gcl’mgol’ts Centr Ophthalmological Institute after its formation from above hospital.
1904-1911 lecturer, eye clinic, Moscow University. From 1912 founder and head, Department of Eye Diseases, Medical Faculty, Moscow Higher Women's Courses (from 1918 2nd Moscow University), where he continued to head this department and was director of eye clinic till his death. 1925 this eye clinic was named for him.
1931-1944 founder and head, Department of Eye Diseases, Centr Postgraduate Medical Institute, Moscow. Company-founder, 1911-1924 Presidium member, Moscow Social of Ophthalmologists. 1924 formed Moscow Ophthalmological Social, uniting ophthalmologists of Moscow City Department of Health.
Took part in congresses of Pirogov Social, international ophthalmological congresses and work of State Learned Medical Council. Foreign many years exec educated journal Arkhiv oftal'mologii later renamed Vestnik oflal'mologii: founder and exec ed, journal Voprosy oftal'mologicheskoy optiki: chairman, All-Union and Moscow Social of Ophthalmologists. Deputy, Moscow City Soviet.
Formed own school of ophthalmologists specializing in practical clinical work and its soc importance which produced Master of Laws Krasnov, North.A. Pletneva, P.Ye. Tikhomirov and others Developed and introduced new eye operations, including operation for detached retina, dacryocystorrhinostomv, opticociliary resection, and operation for pulsating exophthalmus.
Special prize named for him awarded annually by Presidium of Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Medical Sciences to author of best work on ophthalmology.
Member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences from 1939.
