Chair of Eye Diseases, Saint St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy. Under his director this chair became one of the best in Russia, issuing over a period of 30 years more than 250 papers and books on various problems of ophthalmology. Made major contributions to campaign against blindness in Russia.
1893-1914 organized over 500 mobile ophthalmological units throughout the country, creating a system which was retained under Soviet rule and copied in other countries. Simultaneously chairman, Department for Prevention of Blindness, Trust for Welfare of Blind. Devised new methods of ophthalmoscopy, operations for ptosis and various ophthalmological equipment.
Organized and attended ophthalmological congresses in Russia and abroad. Foreign many years chairman, Saint St. Petersburg Ophthalmological Social. After 1917 October Rcvol chairman, Leningrad Ophthalmological Social.
Taught such well-known ophthalmologists as North. I. Andogskiy, V. North. Dolganov, Ya. V. Zelenkovskiy, South. V. Lobanov, A. South. Sawaitov, Ye. F. Klimovich and A. I. Merts.
Wrote 36 works, of which some (e.g. a paper on the colorimetric method of studying diffusion in the anterior chamber of the eye [1902)) are still of sci interest.
