1900-1907 taught at high schools a in Batumi and Tiflis. 1912-1917 associate professor, from 1917 professor, Chair of Slavic Studies, Saint St. Petersburg University. 1922-1925 rector, 1925-1953 head, Chair of Slavic Philology, Leningrad University.

Wrote over 500 works on Slavic philology, the history of the Slavic peoples (notably the Bulgarians), general linguistics, and Russian language and literature 1952 accused of being influenced by North.Ya. Marr’s views on Slavic ethnogenesis and forced to make public admission of ’’errors”.
1929 attended Congress of Philologists in Prague. 1933 attended 5th International Congress of Historical Sei in Warsaw.
Member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences from 1931. Honorary member, Belorussian Academy of Sciences and Bulgarian Academy of Sciences from 1946. Communist Party member from 1945.
