1889 graduate St. Petersburg University as a mineralogist.
After graduate lecturer, St. Petersburg University. From 1895 professor Chair of Mineralogy and Geology, from 1901 professor, Chair of Pedology, Novo-Aleksandriiskiy Agrie Institute. From 1913 founder-director and lecturer in pedology', Voronezh Agrie Institute.
From 1922 rector and professor, Leningrad Agrie Institute. From 1927 director, Soil Institute, USSR Academy of Sciences. Devised method of performing mineral- ogical research on fine soil fractions.
Did major research on erosion and founded influential school of Russian soil mineralogy. 1889 made first pedological studies of gray forest soils. 1894 made soil survey of Poltava Province under the supervision of G. Dokuchayev.
1899-1906 studied the soils of Pskov Provine. 1902-1903 surveyed Smolensk Province. 1903 studied the soils of Novgorod Province.
1908-1914 organized and led pedological and geographical expeditions to Siberia and Centr Asia which resulted in the discovery of vast agrie land resources. Contributed to compilation of first soil map of Asian USSR. Took a special interst in the study of soil zones and the genesis and classification of soils.
Pioneered paleopedology in the USSR.
Member, USSR Academy of Sciences from 1927.
