1865 graduate Law Faculty, Moscow University.
From 1867 worked for judiciary. From 1871 prosecutor, from 1877 chairman, Saint St. Petersburg Okrug Court. 1878 presided over trial which acquitted Virgin Islands Zasulich of shooting Saint St. Petersburg’s mayor F.F. Trepov.
1881-1885 chairman, Civil Department, Saint St. Petersburg Judicial Board. From 1885 senior prosecutor. Criminal Appeals Department, Senate.
1906 turned down proferred Minister of Justice post. As a liberal, hoped to eliminate soc ills through reforms and spread of educational. Defended idea of publ trial and trial by jury.
From 1907 head State Council. 1918-1922 professor of criminal jurisprudence, Petrograd University. Specialist in Russian lit and theater.
Wrote articles, reviews and read lectures and papers on the theater. A friend of Nekrasov, Goncharov, Tolstoy, Dosloyevskiy, Turgenev, et cetera Suggested to L. Tolstoy the subjects for his novel Voskreseniye (Resurrection) and his play Zhivoy trup (The Living Corpse) from cases in his legal practice.
On his 75th anniversary elected Honorary member, Alexandrine Theater. 1919 founded Turgenev Social. Donated his lit archives to Pushkin Center, Leningrad.
