From 1924 worked at Numismatics Department, Hermitage Museum. From 1935 associate, Institute of History and Archcography, then Institute of History, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1941-1942 director, Institute of History, Turkm Branch, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
1942-1945 served in Red Army. From 1945 senior associate, Institute of History, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Specialized in the history of Kievan Rus, the Muscovite State in the 13th and 14th Centuries, historical geography, source research and archeography.
Did major research on Russian chronicles. Company-ed, anthology “Problemy istochnikovedeniya”.
