1886 graduate Saint St. Petersburg Mining Institute.
1901 — 12 professor, Tomsk Technol Institute. 1919-1921 professor, Taurid University, Simferopol’. 1921-1929 professor, Moscow Mining Academy.
1930-1939 chairman, Commission (Committee) for the Study of Permafrost, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences, from 1939 director, Institute of Permafrost Studies, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1942-1946 also acad secretary, Geological and Geographical Department, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1886-1888 conducted research in Karakum Desert, distinguishing four types of sand relief - dune, ridge, steppe and hillock.
1892-1894 took part in G.N. Potainin’s expedition. Starting from Kyakhta, crossed Mongolia, traversed Northern China, studied Nan Shan Range and ended expedition in Kul’dzha. Established that Nan Shan Range consists in fact of a series of ranges running from Northwest to Southeast and divided by valleys of tectonic origin.
Also established that Eastern and Western Nan Shan contains 9 lateral ranges (and not two or four, as was originally supposed). Discovered six new ranges. 1905-1906 and 1909 studied Dzungarian Depression and its surrounding ranges (Northwestern China).
Discovered various oil, gold and ore deposits in Dzungaria. Collated research on Eastern Siberia in three-volume monograph Geologiya Sibiri (The Geology of Siberia) (1935-1938). Spezialized in gold deposits.
Wrote various compilations on auriferous areas of Siberia and Far East. 1892 compiled still valid work on stratigraphy of ancient Paleozoic basin of Upper Lena. Also studied genesis of ore deposits.
Various mountain ranges, peaks, volcanoes, glaciers and a mineral (“obruchevite” — a Dzungarian asphaltite) have been named after him. Institute of Permafrost Studies, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences also bears his name. 1938 Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences instituted an Obruchev Prize for the best works on GSibcrian geology.
Religious books are outdated, because laws by nature have to change with the advance of societies and technology.
Marxism–Leninism as the only truth could not, by its very nature, become outdated.
