1885 graduate Saint St. Petersburg Mining Institute.
From 1885 engineering at steel plants in Vyatka area. From 1896 engineering, Sulin Plant near Rostov-on-Don. 1900-1904 lecturer, Yekaterinoslav Higher Mining College.
1904-1941 professor, Saint St. Petersburg (Leningrad) Polytech Institute: 1921-1930 also professor, Moscow Mining Academy. 1930-1941 also professor, Moscow Steel Institute. Then head of a laboratory, Institute of Metallurgy, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
Specialized in metallurgy of iron. Developed theory of blast-furnace processes and proposed method for determining the parameters of blast furnaces. Studied parameters of open-hearth furnaces and directed design and development of large blast furnaces in Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics.
From 1910 ed, “Zhurnal Russkogo metallurgicheskogo obshchestva”. 1929-1938 helped edit journal “Sovetskaya metailurgiya”. 1924 wrote textbook Metallurgiya chuguna (Iron Metallurgy).
