1893 graduate History and Philology Faculty, Saint St. Petersburg University.
1903-1914 professor, Kiev University. Then worked for organs of Russian (Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics) and Ukraine Academy of Sciences. Directed seminars on Russian philology in Kiev and Leningrad, at one time head, Philological Section, Ukraine Sciences Association in Kiev and ed of its organ “Zapiski ’.
Studied Russian and Ukraine folklore, ancient Russian apocryphal lit, history of Russian, Ukraine and Polish theater. Also worked on historiography, bibliography and textology of literature Sponsored and directed compilation of collections “Starinyy teatr v Rossil XVII—XVIII West” (The Old Theater in Russia in the 17th and 18th Centuries) (1923) and ‘‘Starinyy spektakl' v Rossii” (Old Plays in Russia) (1928).
Member, Ukraine Academy of Sciences from 1919.
