1906 graduate St. Petersburg Military Med Academy.
1906-1921 worked under V. M. Bekhterev at St. Petersburg (Petrograd) Military Med Academy. Corresponded with I. P. Pavlov. 1921-1923 lectured in Perm’.
1923-1941 head, Chair of Psachiatry, Khar’kov Med Institute. From 1927 founder-director, Khar’kov Institute of Clinical Psychiatry and Social and Mental Hygiene (now Khar’kov Psychoneurological Institute). 1931 founded first Chair of Higher Nervous Activity in USSR.
For a while head, Chair of Psychiatry, Khar’kov 2nd Med Institute. 1934-1945 correspondent member, Ukraine Academy of Sciences. 1944 founded Department of Psychiatry, Kiev Institute of Clinical Physiology, Ukraine Academy of Sciences.
Also founded Chair of Psychiatry and Chair of Higher Nervous Activity, Kiev Institute of Postgraduate Med Training. Member, Learned Med Council and chief psychiatrist, Ukraine Min of Health. Did major research on psychiatry and the physiology and pathology of higher nervous activity.
Devised method of inducing conditioned motor reflexes. Studied the formation of motor habits in higher animals under natural experimental conditions, the physiological mechanisms of abstract thinking, and the pathophysiology, biochemistry and therapy of schizophrenia and manic-depressive psychosis. Was one of first Soviet sci to use sleep treatment and detoxication therapy for mental patients.
Wrote over 110 works.
