1905-1907 studied at Physics and Mathematics Faculty, Kiev University. 1913 graduate History and Philology Faculty, Kiev University.
1907 sentenced to one year’s fortress arrest for revol activities. From 1919 taught at teachers’ seminary in Kiev and lectured at Kiev People's University. Also worked at Institute of Public Education, Zhitomir.
From 1929 worked for Atheist Publ House and State Anti-Religious Publ House. Then exec ed, “Moscow Worker” Publ House and Moscow Party State Publ House. Also did research at Institute of Philosophy, Sverdlov Communist Academy.
1935-1937 member, State Academy of History of Material Culture. 1938-1948 senior associate, Institute of History, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Taught at Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature and History.
1937-1941 professor, Moscow University. 1937-1948 deputy chief ed, journal “Vestnik drevney istorii”. Specialized in Judaism and early Christianity, socio-economics history of Eastern Mediterranean in Ancient times.
