1873 moved to Odessa. From 1880 mech, Novorossiysk University, in Odessa, where he established a firstclass precision instruments workshop. Designed various automatic meteorological instruments, including an anemorhumbograph, a pluviograph and a recording mercury barometer.
1893, together with the Russian physicist North. A. Lyubimov, invented a constant frame-shift gate mechanism. Using this, together with the Russian inventor M. F. Freydenberg, he designed the first Russian film camera, termed a “kinetoskop”. 1894 publicly demonstrated this device.
Helped Freydenberg build the first modeal automatic telephone exchange. Also designed a number of astronomical and physical instruments.
