1914 graduated Studio of Painting and Photography.
Entered the film industry in 1914 after graduating from the Private School of Art and Photography in Liepaia. Took part in filming the events of World War I. Member of the All Russia Photo Department, 1919-1923. War cameraman during the Civil War.
Filmed Lenin on many occasions, 1918-1924, and later his footage was used in the film Vladimir Il'ich Lenin, 1948. For a short time in 1921, taught at the State Film School (VG1K). Met S. Eisenstein and began his long collaboration with him.
Cameraman on Stachka, 1925, with V. Khvatov, followed by Bronenosets Potemkin, 1925, Oktiabr', 1927, and Staroe i Novoe, 1929. Internationally recognized as a cameraman of remarkable talent. Accompanied S. Eisenstein and G. Aleksandrov on their tour of the USA and Europe, 1931-1932.
Shot Eisenstein’s Viva Mexico'. Other films include Aleksandr Nevskii, 1938, and Ivan Groznyi(Ivan the Terrible). His films are internationally recognized as masterpieces of the Soviet cinema.
