1880-1885 taught at a girls’ high-school. 1887-1894 teacher, Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. 1894-1897 professor, Novorossiysk University, Odessa.
1897-1899 associate professor, 1899—1922 professor, Moscow University. 1924 emigrated to Latin 1927-1940 professor, Riga University.
After Soviet occupation of Latin returned to Moscow. 1941-1948 professor, Moscow University. Also professor, Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature and History.
1941-1943 professor, Centr Asian University, Tashkent. From 1943 senior associate, Institute of History, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Dealt with various aspects of ancient, medieval and modem history.
At one time criticized the theoretical principles of historical materialism. After his return to the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics had difficulty in adapting his eclectic approach to history to the requirements of Soviet historiography, although his earlier work on Ivan the Terrible found sufficient official favor to merit republieation in 1944.
